Years of food conditioning dozens of black and grizzly bears at his remote homestead in Alaska’s Yentna Valley allows retired Anchorage science teacher Charlie Vandergaw to pet the wild bruins, wrestle with cubs while sows stand by, even sit on the animals and teach them tricks. He says himself that no one should do what he does with wild bears, and state officials make it clear that his feeding program is illegal. Still, many visitors consider the man a bear whisperer.
