From an Associated Press article in South Dakota’s Aberdeen News:
_Hunters who poach big-game animals in South Dakota must be sent to jail for at least three days. That’s the law.
But it won’t be the law much longer.
A bill passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Mike Rounds repeals the mandatory jail sentence for those who shoot deer out of season, without a license or at night.
Officials say the penalty is counterproductive and sometimes unfair.
Some prosecutors don’t agree with the minimum three-day jail requirement and won’t charge people with big-game violations because even people who inadvertently shoot a buck while aiming for a doe must be locked up._
Is this the right decision?
