A while ago, we asked if prairie dog hunting is “hunting” (See our previous blog coverage). Many of you said, and I’m paraphrasing: “No, it ‘shooting’ — but as such is perfectly acceptable pest control.” Now, Wyoming’s fifth annual, three-day “There Goes The Neighborhood” prairie dog shooting contest is stirring up controversy. Some environmentalists and animal rights groups are calling it an abhorrent, cruel event that potentially poisons hawks, foxes, and other scavengers via lead fragments. No surprise there. But some hunters and hunting groups have also historically come out again head-count-type hunts of any sort.
