Iowans Outraged by Elk Poaching

An apparently wild elk delighted Iowans as it pranced through the farm fields surrounding Jasper and Marshall counties—until the protected animal was found dead on December 20. A single shotgun-slug wound through the neck, along with the difficulty of mistaking such a large animal for a deer, has DNR officials calling this the work of a poacher. According to this Desmoines Register story, Whitetails Unlimited has offered a reward of $1,000 to $1,500 for information leading an arrest in connection with the elk's death.
