An apparently wild elk delighted Iowans as it pranced through the farm fields surrounding Jasper and Marshall counties—until the protected animal was found dead on December 20. A single shotgun-slug wound through the neck, along with the difficulty of mistaking such a large animal for a deer, has DNR officials calling this the work of a poacher. According to this Desmoines Register story, Whitetails Unlimited has offered a reward of $1,000 to $1,500 for information leading an arrest in connection with the elk’s death.
