About a dozen years ago, as one of my first jobs at F&S;, David E. Petzal handed me a query with a phone number and asked me to assign a story. I took a deep breath and nervously dialed the number for Houston Chronicle outdoor columnist and F&S; contributing editor Joe Doggett. When he picked up I could barely speak; when he hung up I had a new friend in Texas. More recently, calling the HC’s outdoor desk and listening to the Doggett/Pike comedy routine has never failed to be the highlight of my day. Joe is a pro’s pro and a genuinely good guy. Having written his last column, he can hit the water or woods knowing he’s done his job well and is universally liked and respected by his peers. I hope I’m so lucky.
Congratulations, Joe.
