National Park Hunting: Plan for disabled vet hunts in CA draws fire

Part of California's Channel Islands National Park, wild and wind-swept Santa Rosa Island teems with deer and elk--a perfect place, says Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) for disabled veterans to hunt. But Hunter's vision--approved by the House in May as part of a major defense programs bill--is drawing fire. Under a current federal court settlement, private deer and elk hunts staged on the island must end by 2011, and the nonnative game must be removed. Both the Park Service and congressional Democrats want it to stay that way—leaving the 53,000-acre public island in the midst of a political wrestling match. Here's the full story.
