As the USFWS is busy updating the status of eastern cougars, the experts interviewed in this Greensboro, North Carolina News-Record column say the issue is pretty cut-and-dried, at least in the Tar Heel State. If eastern cougars still roam the area, they say, there should evidence, including tracks, scat, fur, and especially road kill.

“I shall believe that cougars have recolonized North Carolina,” [N.C. State] professor [Roger] Powell says, “when we start having carcasses turned in.”
