One of roughly 6,000 anglers competing in this past weekend’s Lake Champlain International Fishing Derby, local Vermont man Paul Biggs switched from lures to live bait when his boat motor started to sputter—and landed a 14.45 pound lake trout. The fish set a new tournament record, earning Biggs $25,000. Also, for winning the lake trout division and the coldwater species super bonus category, he won another $9,300, a Starcraft jon boat, and a new Yamaha motor—although given its role in his success, he may want to keep his old one handy for next year’s tournament.
