Second New Jersey Bear Killed: No-tolerance policy catches up with backyard bruin

The second bear to wander into New Jersey's "Bear Exclusion Zone" escaped the state's no-tolerance policy Tuesday after taking police and news helicopters on a wild chase (see 5-10-06 link). Wednesday, authorities toting shotguns caught up to and killed the 225-pound bruin near Newark. Also noteworthy are the surprisingly insightful comments recorded in this AP story from urban-area residents who you might otherwise assume wouldn't know the first thing about black bears, including: "It was big and black." "It was way too big to be a cat or dog." And "Why would a bear want to be in Newark? Good gracious! I just hope I don't run into it."
