Snake fight

“I came across a snake fight about this time last year on a secondary road near my home. A couple of young men, Jason Faughn and Brian McCormick, were stopped on the road and it caught my attention. When I walked up to them I noticed they were looking at a snake fight. They had been watching the fight for close to an hour when I arrived.

I had always heard that a king snake would kill a copperhead, but I had never actually seen it happen. I immediately went home and got my digital camera. When I returned the snakes were still fighting, and in the fight the king snake had apparently broken the lower jaw of the copperhead. I watched the fight for another 30 minutes to an hour, and during that time the king snake began eating the copperhead, head first. It was getting dark and I didn’t want anyone to run over the snakes, so I scooped them off to the side of the road. I figured if the king snake would kill one copperhead, it would probably kill another copperhead at a later date.”
