10 New Shotguns from the 2008 SHOT Show

SHOT Show, 2008, Las Vegas, guns, hunting, gear, shotguns, shooting, new products, NSSF
Benelli UltraLight 20 Gauge
Benelli's UltraLight 12 gauge was the last word in downy-light autoloaders -" until now. Their new 20 gauge weighs just a bit over five pounds, a full pound less than the 12. As with the 12, the 20 gets its weight savings from a lighter, shorter magazine tube and a carbon fiber rib. The gun operates via Benelli's proven inertia system and it holds three three-inch shells with the magazine unplugged. The wood is protected by Benelli's WeatherCoat finish and tipped with a gel recoil pad. MSRP $1445

Beretta SV10 Perennia
Italian makers aren't afraid of contemporary styling, even in traditional designs like the O/U. The new SV 10 Perennia features a receiver with angular, futuristic lines, but its real innovations are found in the stock. It's the first O/U available with the very effective Kick-Off recoil reducer, previously available only on 391 series guns. In addition, a cap on the pistol grip covers a screw that allows you to remove the stock without having to take off the recoil pad, as you must with any other break-action gun.

Franchi I-12 Upland Hunter
The reduced-weight Upland Hunter promises to be every bit as quick to the hunter's shoulder as it is to cycle 2 ¿¿ and 3-inch ammunition. Like its cousins in the Benelli family, the I-12 is inertia operated, making it very clean shooting and very, very fast. The Upland version saves weight with a trimmer stock and forearm and a lightened alloy receiver. The 12-gauge version weighs just 6-1/4 pounds with a 26-inch barrel. MSRP $1129

Browning 16-gauge BPS Upland Special
Not just a nostalgic favorite, the 16-gauge is also a deadly-efficient upland load. It's capable of turning a 20-gauge size gun into the near ballistic equivalent of a 12-gauge. Browning's new 16-gauge pump is built as a 16 should be, on a 20 gauge-framed gun for light weight and quick handling. The gun comes in both pistol grip and straight stocked versions, with either 26 or 28-inch barrels. Like all BPS models, the 16 features a thumb safety and bottom ejection. MSRP $566

H&R; Topper Trap Gun
This inexpensive trap gun was the hit of the pre-SHOT shooting event I attended; everyone who tried it loved it. Based on the H&R; action that's been around for roughly 100 years, the Topper Trap gun features upgraded wood, a soft, trap-style recoil pad, and a 30-inch barrel with twin beads on its nylon vent rib. The gun comes with a single IM extended choke tube. Intended as an entry-level gun, especially for younger shooters, this new gun is just fun to shoot, and at its low price, it should find its way into lots and lots of gun cabinets. MSRP $360

Mossberg Super Bantam Model 500
This is the year of the pink gun, and Mossberg's 500 Super Bantam follows suit with a pink camo stock and forearm that should make this already kid-friendly gun even cuter and more non-threatening. The Super Bantam comes with a stock spacer that allows the gun to grow along with its owner. The pull adjusts from 12 inches to 13 in minutes. And did I mention it's pink?

SKB Game and Clays Gun
The game and clays guns are intended for use in all seasons, allowing you to become the proverbial "man with one gun" that people are supposed to beware of. SKBs have long been underrated and under appreciated by the majority of shooters, yet these Japanese made O/Us have strong, low profile receivers and sell for a very competitive price. The game and clays series comes in three grades and all four gauges, with 28- and 30-inch barrels. MSRP $1679 (Grade I)

Weatherby SA-08
Weatherby has a long history of working with overseas vendors who are able to meet the high standards of the company's brand. At first look, these new Turkish-made autoloaders seem to be worthy of the Weatherby name. Just before the show I had the chance to run a few boxes of shells through both the wood-stocked 12 and synthetic 20 gauge SA-08 Upland guns. I found both to be soft-shooting and sure-pointing. Both guns are slim and quite light, with the 12 weighing around 6 ¿¿ pounds and the 20 scaling well under 6. Each gun comes with two pistons, one for heavy loads and another for light loads. I had no failures to function with either gun new out of the box.

Winchester Speed Pump
Winchester's 1300 pump is reborn this year as the "Speed Pump," basically the same slick-pumping gun as before, but now made in a Turkey model. The 1300 has never received its due as a very fast-firing, lightweight pump, but it's a lot of fun to shoot. Its rotary bolt allows anyone to shuck the action effortlessly, something I learned at Browning's pre-show shooting event. The new guns are nearly identical to the original 1300s and are available in 12-gauge synthetic and walnut stocked versions. Given the skill Turkish gun makers have with wood, I'd go with the walnut version. MSRP $399 (walnut) $349 (synthetic)

Remington 11-87 ShurShot Super Mag Turkey (photo currently unavailable)
Tactical and thumbhole stocks are hot for turkeys right now, and for good reason: they're comfortable to hold onto during those long moments as you wait, gun ready, for a turkey to give you a clear shot. The ShurShot's pistol grip gives you plenty to hold onto, and the ambidextrous cheekpiece puts your eye in the right place for either iron sights or optics. And, Remington's proprietary SuperCell pad combines with the 11-87's gas action to reduce recoil of even 3-1/2 inch, 2-ounce turkey loads. There's also a ShurShot 11-87 Cantilever Slug Gun and ShurShot 870 Super Mags in both deer and turkey versions. MSRP $925
