Q:
I'd like to start an informal group called Hunting and Fishing Gear Addicts Anonymous (HFGAA). We could meet here for the time being until it grows, if it grows. My name's Jbird, and I am a hunting and fishing gear addict. I have more gear than I could possibly use in my lifetime, and I can't stop purchasing more. There, I've said it. I'm not loaded, so lately it's just been a bit of camo here, a call there, a lure here, a reel there. I do believe this is a true addiction, and I'd like to bring it to light for all of us suffering from it. So, anyone else want to join the group?

I know many people suffering from this common addiction. It can cost you hours of fun on the water or in the treestand.
My name is Streack and I need help, I once turned down a night on the town with a young lady in order to finance a new Zink Paralyzer goose call. I know I am in the advanced stages of this addiction and if help does not come soon I will forever be caught up in this life style. May God have mercy on my soul.
i think there might not be much hope for me but if guys think you can help me i'll give it a try
Streack, I am proud of your courage for admitting this. You are in the advanced stages. Just take little steps to try to get better, you'll never be cured, but I believe you can get better. First step, get your priorities straight for God's sake man! Women before gear! It's ok, I've cost myself many lonely nights w/my wife for purchansing something that I just "had to have". But I did hide the disease until she was my "wife". Play your cards right, you don't want to be old and ALONE and addicted.
hjohn429, Im not sure how buying new stuff can cost you hours of fun on the water or in the stand, but I hear your confusing words as a cry for help. It's ok to admit you have this affliction. We're here to support you. We suffer TOO.
Dear soon to be hfgaa members. I am here to help you. You can call me a counselor of some sort. I feel the first step for all you gentlemen in beating this is to remove all temptaion around you. My suggestion to you is that you get all of your hunting and fishing gear put it in a box and send it to me so i can dispose of it properly. I am so willing to help you with your addiction i will even pay for the shipping. But if you are going to get rid of this addiction you need to give up 100% of your gear. Guns, boats, hunting vehicles, and yes even hunting land. Giving up your gear may have a reverse effect at first making you want to buy more gear. But you can also send that gear to me too! Once again i hope you can overcome your addiction and i am here to help.
willkillsdeer, there is hope. Just knowing how many of us suffer from this diseade is enough to bring a ray of hope. Now let me be frank, I don't believe there is a "cure" for this. Our best bet is to take the diabetes stance/ where we try to live w/ and manage our illness. Just focus on keeping the disease under control enough to avoid all-out financial disaster. That's the first step, for if you declare bankruptcy, you will lose alot of your stuff, or at least your residency where you keep your gear. Welcome to the group friend, we can survive this!
victoryw228- SHAME ON YOU! Preying on the weakness of HFGAA members is dispicable! You are in the horrible stages of this disease, one where you'll do anything to get your fix, including scheming, cunning, and trying to trick other addicts into supplying you w/ more gear. You need help man, you need help. Join us, don't prey upon us. Shameful indeed.
If addiction is a disease and this disease has no cure I need to go on permanent disability.
Golfing Sportsman, we're gonna need ALOT more members to get that. There's millions of Alcoholics Anonymous members, and not one alcoholic on permanent disability. No, you just have to learn to "live" w/ your disease. Here's a tip, if it's nice enough to golf, it's nice enough to fish. There, now if your a "real" addict, you'll sell your golf gear and buy fishing stuff. Welcome to HFGAA anyways. We don't discriminate, even towards "golfers".
Who me? I don't have a gear problem. And I don't appreciate you implying that I do. I just like being prepared ... for any situation ... at any time. So, whether you catch me at the office, or at home, or just in my vehicle, I'll be ready ... prepared for any outdoor activity.
I don't mean to be rude but I have never heard of anything so preposterous in all my life. It's something called self control, if you don't need it you don't buy it. where in the world do you get the money for all the stuff in the first place. If you have your life in order and your priorities straight you shouldn't have this " disease or addiction" to begin with. It is a conscious decision you are making to buy what ever it is. No one is holding a gun to your back forcing you to buy it. It's as simple as walking away from what ever you are looking at.
rabbitpolice88, I think that you maybe in denial. I don't think that I have a problem, but my wife thinks i do. Does that mean that I'm in denial too?
MLH and rrmont, it's ok to deny it. We've all been there. When you're ready to take that 1st huge step: admitting you have the addiction, HFGAA will accept you w/open and understanding arms. We know all the different stages of your affliction, and we don't judge.
rabbitpolice88, we are glad that your life is in such order, and you exhibit so much self control. We members of HFGAA would like to be that way too, but oh, the powers of rationalization. I hope you never find yourself in the clearance isle of a sporting goods store thinking "I know I don't need this, but man, that's as cheap as I'll ever see it, I'll get it now, then I'll be so glad I did when I do need it". You know, lashing out at others w/the addiction is also a sign, sooo, maybe you're in the closet. If that's the case, don't fret, we'll still accept you whenever you're ready, and we'll forgive you're criticisims. We members of HFGAA know this is a terrible addiction, and can make one do and say bad things. Sleep well Waskilly Wabbit, sleep well.
Oh, and MLH, I feel your pain on the "prepared" deal, right now I think I currently have 5 flashlights in my truck, 2 fishing scales, a turkey call, and my entire cadre of hunting knives. Oh and @ least 4 different pairs of gloves. Ahhh, felt good sharing that w/ the group.
HAHAHAHAHA! wow, truly pathetic. Believe me I do not have a problem with self control. I have 2 deer rifles, 2 knives, 2 fishing poles and one tackle box ( not even full). rrmont, if you are spending money unwisely on things that you don't need or that could be used in a better manor, I would not say you are in denial. You just didn't learn to be responsible with a credit card. If you are not buying things you don't really need than there is no need to worry. Believe me you know whether you need it or not. Something you can actual use, not something you tell yourself you might need in 6 months.
My name is wallofsam and I have a problem. There I said it! Please don't tell my wife I admitted this, all she'll say is "I told you so" The first step is done, what's step 2 and how many steps are there?
love stuff to buddy i will join if it is free. becuase i have to by more stuff
Nope, nope, no problem. Just to prove it to myself I am in Cabela’s bargain cave. I am only buying stuff that I really need … like these camo seat covers that will fit the 2004 Ford F-150 Super Crew that I’ve been eyeballing. Great price ... can save the money now since this is a one time offer. I hope they don’t sell that truck to someone else, though. And … ohhh! a 5wt Ross Evolution #2 reel. Wow! This will make a nice backup to my other two 5 wts, just in case they both break. See, only things that I really need. No problem.
Will be stopping at Gander Mountain on the way home. They've still got some of the newfangled foam Quaker turkey mouth calls in stock. Anything I can pick up for you guys?
MLH, if they happen to have a sense of humor could you pick it up for rabbitpolice88, he seems to be in desperate need of one.
Hahahahaha! now that's funny!
Does this mean I have to get rid of my Cabela's Card? Because if it does I'm out, I have too many points stockpiled to get rid of it.
My name is Del in KS and I am a gearaholic.....This all started when Santa left a 410 shotgun under the Christmas tree in 1960. Wait til you see the cool Peete boot dryer I got at Cabela's. Then there's the new hunting knife that will go in the knife drawer. Can't have too many knives. Did I mention the four really cool tents I got last month?
Wow! Our #'s are growing fast!
wallofsam- Welcome! We are proud of you for admitting you have a problem. Welcome to HFGAA, and it stands for Hunting and Fishing Gear Addicts ANONYMOUS, so don't worry, we'll tell noone of your addiction.
boomer1, Welcome, and of course it's free, we don't want to spend good gear-buying money on this now do we?
MLH- It's ok, denial is a huge part of this disease. I've experienced it myself. It's the sole reason I've lost so many arguments w/my wife over the years, because I'd try to "explain" why I bought what I did. I like your thinking on the reel and the seat-covers though. Sound wisdom. But BEWARE of offering to buy us stuff, that is a slippery slope my friend! Our goal is to learn to cope with this disease, and avoid financial ruin because of it. You may be able to afford your vice, but trust me, you can't possibly afford all of ours.
Now having said that- do keep an eye open for sense of humor's!
rrmont- very well said. From what I can tell, rabbitpolice88 must be around 12 years old. That's the only explanation I've been able to come up w/ so far for only having 1 tackle box and 2 knives. The pre-pubescent hormones would also explain his aggrivation.
streack- Don't panic my friend, don't panic. Getting rid of a Cabela's Card w/ points on it is just ludicrous! We @ HFGAA would never ask you to do such a thing. We'd never ask you to do ANYTHING that we wouldn't do ourselves. Now, if your nearing bankruptcy, use your points, THEN consider getting rid of the card.
Del in KS- Welcome! We understand how something so innocent as a Christmas present can set off this terrible addiction. Yes, you are absolutely correct in saying you simply CAN'T have too many hunting knives. Four tents? Wow, nice! I'm currently tent shopping myself because my wife's dog destroyed our's last summer, along w/my air mattress. No, I did not kill the dog, and that took alot of self-reasoning, believe me. But that story is for another time. Non the less, welcome to HFGAA!
im am having to agree with Del in KS, i can never have enough knives, if something catches my eye its going home with me, and here lately ammo has been stealing lots of my gear money. is that covered in the hunting part of HFGAA. i cant believe im saying this. i really need help, will you accept a gun nut like me into a hunting and fishing group.
kolbster-- We will ABSOLUTELY accept a gun nut!I myself, am a certifiable gun nut. It's ok to admit you need help. We all do. A large portion of my guns have no real "hunting" use, but I still love them and consider them "must haves". Welcome to HFGAA, don't worry, we'll get through this. As for hunting knives, they are like fishing lures, you CANNOT possibly have too many. And don't even get me started on camo! I could camo a small regiment of men as long as they were reasonably close to my size. Ahhh, see, it's feels liberating to share w/ the group. Glad to have ya aboard!
Streack, how do you have points stockpiled? Maybe you can teach me that trick. Some how my points all ways end up at zero. Not sure how its happening either, one day i will look online and it will tell me i have $30 available, two days later a box from cabelas arrives at my house with some awesome piece of gear, then i check my account, and Poof, no more points available, and not sure what happened. Please help.
jbird, it's not aggrivation it's complete and utter disbelief! You guys should go on the Opra show, she would love to have you all on there and make you talk to some brain doctor and help you get in contact with your inner selves. I am not 12, I am 20, have a job and am in college.
Is it bad when you have a maxed credit card solely for the purpose of buying new gear? Or does that mean it's time for a new card...for more new gear?
If you guys are just having fun and playing around please tell me, I am starting to get worried for your well being! If not, I will pray for you as hard as I know how!
Pray rabbitpolice88, pray hard! Oprah doesn't return my calls, and appearing on her show kinda takes the Anonymous out of HFGAA now doesn't it. Your young waskilly wabbit, young enough to not understand this big old world. For Christ's sake, you don't even have a full tacklebox yet! (and all that that implies) But we @ HFGAA are still proud of YOUR fiscal responsibility, but don't beseech us for lacking it, ok?
HillbillyDeluxe, yes, technically it is "bad" to max out your credit card on gear. What are you going to do when you find that next "must have" and you can't charge it? Seriously though, you are in the advanced stages of this disease, one where financial collapse is possible. Avoiding that is the main purpose of HFGAA. Join us, and we'll try to help you through this.
My application for membership:
I have a GPS for no reason at all.
I bought a $20 fishing lure--for no reason.
I have more soft plastics than I can ever use in my entire life.
There is hope, though. I have never bought anything that I absolutely knew I did not have the money for, even though some of the things I have bought are absolutely useless. Does this disqualify me?
Jlfreeborn- You totally qualify. It's commendable that you've had the restraint to stay out of debt w/ your addiction. You're just the kind of person we need, addicted, but living and coping w/ the disease. I myself have a "very seldomely used" GPS, but I wouldn't say "for no reason @ all". Just last month I purchased a $20 fishing lure too. But I just HAD to see if a $20 lure caught more fish that a $3 one. And I also have more soft plastics than one would consider 'sane'. See, that's the point of HFGAA, to let others know that there's folks out there just like you! Welcome to the group, we're glad to have ya!
If you have so much stuff mail me some!!!!!!!! I literaly dont have 1 call, or one shirt or pair of pants that is cammo. I literaly dont have anything! the only thing i have is a .410! and I havnt even gone hunting with it yet.
by the way if I had that kind of money I would be just like you. I used to be the same then I kind of just shook it off, ya know. I used to be like once I got like 10$ I would go spend it. Now Im still kind of like that except I save it then by somethin for like 200 - 300$
JBIRD-??START A GROUP??MY FRIEND WELCOME TO THE GROUP!!!! MY COFFIN HAS A FALSE BOTTOM AND DRAWERS.
yes, i have this addiction but i like it!!!!!!!!!
Sign me up for your group and I'm going out to buy more stuff!!!
