Q:
its almost the holiday and i cant figure out what to get my dad for christmas. He said he wanted something to do with flyfishing and i was thinking about an assorted box of flies. You guys have any idea how to fulfill this request without breaking the bank AND being able to buy something that is good quality?

i was thinking maybe of getting my pa one of the bill dance hook removers, they look pretty slick. Maybe a new pair of waders or new fly reel or rod maybe.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE GEAR I WOULD GO TO YOUR LOCAL BAIT AND TACKLE STORE AND TALK TO THE SALESPERSON ABOUT WHAT IS A GOOD SELECTION OF FLIES OR TACKLE FOR THE AREA OR OPTION 2 BUY A GIFT CARD FOR THE AMOUNT YOU WANT TO SPEND ON THE GIFT AND ALLOW DAD TO PURCHASE WHAT EVER HE NEEDS OR WANTS.

You might consider a fly tieing kit. The basics are not too expensive and if he enjoys fly fishing, it is a must for having the right fly.

Ask the local fly shop which four patterns are the hottest on the water he likes most to fish then get each in three sizes. The dozen flies should cost in the $20 - $25 range. He'll remember your thoughtful gift each time he ties one on to his tippet.

A fly box scientific anglers make nice ones that won't break you. A neck lanyard for the days he wants to carry less. A book from John Gierach or Lefty Kreh is also always nice. A personally like gadgets like nippers and such most flyfisherman do
Flys are nice but are lost, hung up or used quickly. If you dont get good advice before buying them they may be to large/small or just not what he prefers for a certain area.

Something a lot of flyfishermen could use but don't bother buying is a thermometer. I like the ones protected by a steel shell, designed for fisherman. Less than $20.

I bet he'd like a fly tying kit. He'd be able to experiment and make his own flies. Wish my son would get me one.
