A very dear friend and colleague asked me to lay out my idea of a perfect hunting rifle down to the "T". I told him I was great admirer of the Montana M1999 action as it (in my opinion) is the best rendition yet of the classic model 70 Winchester and Mauser actions. It is also made in a left hand model since I'm oriented in that direction. I related that I'm a fan of classic cartridges. I've long been a fan of the 6.5 X 55 cartridge. Under loaded by modern standards but still a very capable and mild shooting cartridge. Kick it up a notch in a modern action and it is even more capable. Plus, those long 6.5 bullets don't want to quit flying and will penetrate very well. I related that I'm a fan of walnut stocks even though they may crawl and shift, but a company called Accurate Innovations has largely settled that issue with thier aluminum bedding system. Us wood nuts can now have our cake and eat it too! I also related that I'm a big fan of matte blued metal.
Several months later while visiting his office he gave me a plain cardboard box, on the outside was a shipping lable from Montana Rifle Company. I was speechless and dumbfounded. In the box was the very barreled action I had described with a left hand bolt and 6.5 X 55 inscribed on the barrel. Under it was a stock from Accurate Innovations, a beautiful piece of tiger striped Claro Walnut with their famous bedding system plus Rosewood T&C. I was physically sick.
What a gift between friends. One that I'll never be able to repay in anyother way but friendship. But, I think that is what he had in mind...!
PS- The rifle shoots as good as it looks!
well i have a few of my fathers and grandfathers guns and knives .that were given to me at each step in my hunting life . a shot gun when i was old enough to hunt small game , a remington 700 243 win when i was legal to hunt deer .( even though i started deer hunting at age 12 with a shot gun with my dad ) the shot gun and 243 were mile stone's to me in my life , and mean the world to me . i can remember the day, and all the details of it when i received them . handling my( pop ) grandfathers guns and knives i can still hear his voice and see him just as plain as day . these item's are a connection to great day's and well taught lessons from my past . happily the shot gun i got from my dad is now my 12 year olds gun i gave it to him on opening morning of turkey season this spring . mile stone #1 complete : )
Beekeeper-
What a great story!
I would have to say that your gift is unparalleled, and the sole example of a man that took great heed and happiness, towards the inclination of a very dear friends knowledge, desire and kindred spirit.
Just looking at the gift, one would never be able to realize the depth of affection behind the gift giver.
How long ago did this take place Beekeeper?
Thanks for sharing!

Another great family story!
There is something about family passing down objects of desire, that have been used over the years as we hunt or fish together. It's almost as if they have placed their own stamp of approval on the item, and the experience that you have had, being with them in the woods, actually seeing the guns being used, and the sweetness of the memory.
I liked the idea, how the knives and guns were given to you at various steps of walk in your life, creating demarcations that begin to map out your life with a history and a memory.
Not only that, but like your father before you,and his father before him, you, cooner, are now passing down that loving, family tradition,to you 12-year old son!
What is your 12-year old sons name?
Thanks cooner for sharing, you guys have made my day a little more enjoyable!
2popa thank you very much for the posting it brought back a rush of great memories , it was hard to think straight for a few minuets .
my son's name is Hunter
That's what I wanted to give to my son as a middle name,Bo Hunter Orr,but my wife wouldn't hear tell of it.
One of my best friends knew that I wanted to use that name so he named his son,Hunter.
Matter of fact,I'll be seeing him this week-end as I go to a 3-D shoot up in Noblesville,Indiana.
Thanks cooner.
Anymore stories? Let's hear 'em!
2Poppa, it was a little over a year ago. I can't tell you how good that rifle feels to hols and hunt with. Thanks for posing this thoughtful question!
Bee
well my wife let me name him hunter but under a bit of protest. i must admit she didn't like it when you turn his name around you know last name first type of thing because it is then Savage Hunter Michael . but she got over it .
our club has a big shoot coming up this month as well the mountain challenge we got Gander mountain to sponsor our shoot a few years ago and they have been great to work with . good luck to you at yours
my dad handed me down his .410 which was my very first gun i ever had it was realy special to me because of everything its been through it started off as my great grandfathers first gun then went to my grandfather to my dad and know to me so im the 4th hunter this gun started off.
Last October I returned from deployment and my watch broke. So one of my buddies gave me a dive watch. Now I am not big on watches and not this one because it was to big... I have this GySgt that was showing me how to fish salt water and I being a Cpl respected the fact that he would help me learn. So when he said that he needed a watch I gladly told him that I would give him my watch that I had only wore for a week. He tried to pay me for it but I would and could not take a payments for something I got for free. About a month later he asked me to go out to his truck to grab a pole for him. So I grabbed it and brought it in the shop. It is a 8 foot pole with a really nice reel on it. He gave it to me, said that I was working hard at trying to catch fish and needed a better pole. He also said it was because I was his friend, now I know some people will say thats fratinization but to me I still respect the rank and I am not calling him by his first name. That made me proud when he gave me that pole.
I have a Marine Kabar that my Dad's cousin carried in WWII. It has his name engraved into the hard sheath. He gave it to my dad after the war and dad left it to me.
Beekeeper, That was one heck of a nice gift your friend gave you. Makes me even more proud to call you my friend. You must be one very fine fellow for someone to do that for you.
Beekeeper,
Please tell your friend for me that my idea of a nice gun is a shotgun from Purdy.....just kidding yuk haha. I did hear of a stock broker that was gifted a new Purdy O/U in 28 guage by a wealthy client.
I had an experience similar to Beekeeper. A few years ago, my boss started quizing me on a rifle he was thinking of getting for deer hunting. A couple of months later at a little company gathering, he called me into his office and presented me with a beautiful Weatherby in .25-06 with a nice Leupold 3.5-10x scope. I was shocked speachless and tears came to my eyes. I just couldn't believe it. I will treasure it the rest of my life and will never forget how shocked I was.
Dakotaman, In as much as Beekeeper must be a good friend, you must be a good employee! Never got a bonus like that. My dad gave me his favorite deer rifle (Savage110 .30-06) about 15 years ago, and i cherish it, ugly as it may be! It's a thing of beuty to me, especially on the range.
I posted this here before but I had a mentor much older than me and I lived or died on very word of every hunting story. He took me out hunting when ever he could and all the things that he told me ring true to this day. Just before he died he gave me his hunting knife. Not a fancy expensive knife at all but the knife that he wore constantly on every out door adventure. It is one of the most precious of my possessions. I think of my friend every time I strap on this knife for a day in the woods.
I would have to say my dog. the story of how he got his name has been posted before " tell us your dog's name July 10,2009". the drunken friend that named her was killed three months ago. he was coming home from work late at night, a drunk driver hit his car right on the drivers side door. He was DOA.
His wife asked if Balzack would be able to attend the funeral, i said his schedule is clear, so there was 7 pallbearers. Everytime i call the dog i think of him.
Dakota,
That was one heck of a work place gift. You must be a valuable asset to the company! Congratulations and keep up the good work. Oh, don't forget to take the boss hunting!
Thanks guys for your answers!
All of them are great stories, kind of like chicken noodle soup for the soul!
My son gave me a high quality gun safe for fathers day. I mentioned I was thinking of buying one and he & the wife went to Cabelas and got it and brought it home.
Dang Moishe-
That was a great and thoughtful gift your son and daughter-in-law gave you!
I didn't grow up hunting, so I didn't know much besides what I had observed while enjoying the outdoors. Therefore the greatest gift anyone has given me when it comes to hunting, is actually taking the time to teach me how to hunt. It is easy to go about your ways, and not take new people hunting, and oh so difficult to take the extra time to show someone else the ways. The only way I can ever repay the gift I have received from a select few individuals is to pay it forward to others who want to learn how to hunt. This activity seems to be in decline, and it could use a few more good people.
