Q:
Just talked with a rep from Kimber and found out that it will take a LONG time to recieve a new 84M Montana in 7mm-08. He suggested that I order the rifle in .308 caliber which is a slightly bigger caliber then what I wanted but I could live with it. The price of the rifle is the same if I was to order it in the .308 caliber versus the 7mm-08, but there is a used .308 model for sale at a local gun shop that is around 150 dollars cheaper. Should I consider the used rifle (a couple of rust spots on the action) or just spend the extra 150$ and get a brand new rifle that has no rust spots or unknown damage to it and I know that its in perfect working condition (hopefully) from the factory?

I would guess you are are only getting about a 10% discount on the used model. I'd pass and get the new. I haven't had the best luck buying used guns so I am definitely biased towards paying the extra for new.

I have a 8400 classic in 25 05 and love the gun. That is not enough of a deal for me to buy used. I would buy the new.

What's the price of shells,7mm-08 vs .308.

I do like the .308,I'd go with the new purchase. The wait may be worth it, if the price of shells are vastly different.

Rust spots on a Montana? That's a SS action, isn't it? SS can corrode but I'd wonder about the care the gun's received. For the price difference go with the new gun. Best to put the blemishes in yourself since they tell a story.

If you have your heart set on a 7m-08 why not just order one and wait? Or, you can get the .308 and have a gunsmith replace the barrel with a custom 7mm-08. Save the .308 barrel, though.

No brainer. Buy the new one. If there were rust spots on a fine rifle, a 30% discount from price of new might be considered. Forget it, get the 7mm-08 you want.

First of all, I’d go with the 308 over the 7mm-08 any day. I make my hunting rounds by pulling M118 172 grain FMJ’s and replacing them with Hornady 165 Soft Point Boat Tails and they work fantastic in my M1A! There are tons of military surpluses out there to get you plenty of trigger time and everyone including Wal-Mart carries it.

As for the small rust spots? Maybe you can live with it, but if you shoot like I do, I would go with the new rifle.

PS

I kicked alot of 300 Win Mags butt on the 1000 yard line with my M1A shooting 308 open sights B)

Go figure!

To clarify my previous blather, I assumed you really wanted the 7mm-08. I would never settle for a blemished gun nearly the price of new in a caliber I did not want.

However, I agree with Clay on the .308 Win. It would be my choice personally. That said, I killed my first deer with a high powered rifle with a .308 Win. The same rifle that I had a great time on the range with on Father's Day. Proofed a batch of handloads with Ramshot TAC with 150 gr. Speer Hot-Cor softpoints. Absolutely less than MOA. Had 2 touching in a couple of groups! The .308 Win will put a train wreck on any deer hit with it, just like an '06.

I'm a big fan of both cartridges as each have their merits. I own rifles in both calibers and have taken a great deal of game with both calibers. The .308 might be able to do a bit more especially with heavier bullets. Ammo for the .308 is also widely available.

As for the Kimber, I agree with the rest of the gang, buy the new rifle for the paltry difference.

You should tell the Gun shop owner that he needs to cut another 150.oo off the used one. Otherwise, buy the new gun. $150 ain't much.
