Q:
Anybody have any good "oh $hit" moments when distracted while hunting? You know, you're about to have a midday snack to re-energize and warm up a little. Right when you're about to bite in, your prize walks into view. You have a mouth full and a gun or bow leaning against the tree just inches out of reach.

one time last pheasent season i was hunting with my dad it was kinda a lousy dad with no shots or even sighns of the birds we kept walking and out of nowhere came a nice ringneck nicest i saw in all my life i brought my gun up and followed it through the air i had a nice shot just as i was about to shoot i saw two yellow signs which i knew were the posted no hunting signs the bird flew right between them
I've sure got one of these moments. I was sitting in a tree stand that gets little use on the back side of a swamp. The reason that the stand get so little use is the amount of time involved in walking to it. I finally got there and settled in for a long wait. For three hours there was not as much as a squirrel kicking up leaves. Absolutely nothing! I was getting uncomfortable but tried as hard as I could to hold my position with no movements. I knew that I wouldn't last much longer and decided to stand and stretch for a minute or two. I took the arrow from the whisker biscuit and hung the bow on a shorten branch and then stood up as slowly as I could. I bent slightly to each side to limber up and then turned my head slowly to the left. Out of my peripheral vision I saw a deer and from what I could see he looked good! I turned very slowly and saw a beautiful 8 point with his neck close to the ground, perfectly motionless, looking directly at me!I knew that I didn't have a prayer so I continued to remain as motionless as I could until he twisted around and disappeared into the falling darkness. I waited until total darkness settled and then as quietly as I could left the area. I always think about that deer when I'm getting uncomfortable in my stand and want to move just a little.
Happens every time sitting in the tules waiting for the ducks decide to take a piss and half way through I got 50 mallards at 25 yards.
Two years ago I had just lowered my bow to the ground, stood and turned to climb down and mr big stuff walked out right behind my tree. It would have been an easy broadside shot. All I could do was watch him walk away as I tried to pull the bow back up and knock an arrow to no avail.
EXACTLY idduckhntr! Have the same problem. Once i get my chest waders down, everyone screams at me to get my head down and all i can do is watch. Talk about a pissy situation. I have to piss, I'm pissed off cause i can't shoot, and everyone gets pissed at me cause i probably made all the ducks flare away. Guess thats just the way it goes....
New Mexico 1980 Mule deer hunting
4pm just had to go pants down and a 8 pointer goes up the hill 300 yards in front of me!
Clay, one time my dad had that problem but he has his rifle leaning on a tree next to him and he shot the deer with pants down haha.... I've never had a moment like that though
3 years ago useing a drag rag went to my stand half way up the 20 ft ladder i saw something out of the coner of my eye a nice ten point came straight under my stand me on the lader my bow on the ground hooked to a pull string he followed me in .
After my friend missed a tom early one morning we moved and started calling there was a lull. So we pulled our masks glaves and leaned our shotguns against a tree. Then a big crash ten minutes later. We were unprepared but they were about 50 yards out. I took my first bird at 45 yards so I made up for it.
It is written, thou hunter who drops thy pants calls all game to come out and view.
Must be irresistible, your bare ass sticking out there, "That I gotta see" says the deer or whatever
Classic old tale of taking answering the call. I was hunting a WMA Hog hunt on a drizzly morning. Folks were zapping pork all around me and nary a pig was in sight. I have to spend a penny so to speak and whilst in the process along comes a nice BBQ hog of about 65 lbs. literally right up to my... uh... shall we say stream... Said gun is leaning against obligatory tree and well you guys know the rest. Away trots the pork and I'm left ...well... not quite empty handed but close enough...
While steelhead fishing in upstate NY we walked by a nice pool holding a bunch of fish while heading back to the truck. We threw everything at them to no avail. I put a worm on a hook and through it out there while standing on a bridge and undid my pants to take a leak. Of course I got a hit and had to run around the bridge and down a steep bank while fighting this fish with my tackle hanging out. I did land it and it is to this day my largest freshwater fish.
Just goes to show that when you show your a$$, the whole world sees it! LMAO
One time I had fallen asleep in the stand. I woke up and saw a smallish 6 pointer about 150 yds out, walking away from me. The worst part was that I could see his trail in the dewey grass and he had walked directly out from under my stand. Had I woken up probably 45 seconds sooner I would have been able to take my pick on yardage anywhere from 5-60 yards. I'm in Illinois and we shotgun hunt, so 150 with an open sighted 870 wasn't really an option for me.
one time muzzleloader hunting somebody moved in alittle to close for me and he had no clue i was there we are not required to wear blaze orange during this season but i always keep a blaze orange hat with me so i put it on and moved across the field and sat with my buddy he fell asleep and i watch 23 turkeys in the field and turkeys season was in with a muzzleloader i never woke him up but moved in position to take my shot and the turkeys took off running and flying i just knew they saw me move but little did i know about 10 seconds after the turkeys took off a massive 8-10 pointer bailed out of the woods on full out run i woke him up i told hugh buck on the run and we watched the deer run right where i was sitting after it got dark we walked over to see just how far it really was the deer stopped and walked 20 yards past where i was on the ground it would have been the biggest deer i have ever shot so that was my moment now i wish i would have stood my ground.
One of the nicest bucks I've taken came out while I was standing up in my stand , taking a whiz in a bottle. Luckily I didn't miss him. Last fall, I had a buck and doe decoy out during bow season. I fell asleep, and I swear to God, I was woke up by a buck SNORTING at my decoys. I opened my eyes, figured out where in the hell I actually was, then looked over to see a nice 8 pointer snorting at my decoys. 30 yds., broadside, he saw me move, and slowly wandered off, I grunted him back 4 or 5 times, but never into bow range. He was blowing the entire time. Embarrassed? You bet I am, but hey, it's a funny story to tell, you just gotta' be able to laugh at yourself.
Was in my treestand. Hung the bow, stood up and turned around. Unfastened my pack and balanced it on the folded up seat. Pulled out my headlight and put it on, just as a buck ran up and stopped directly under me. Leaned over to look at it and my headlight fell off and hit an antler. The buck took off and stopped about 30 yards broadside. Must have been comical watching me hipping the pack against the tree so it wouldn't fall, grabbing my bow, and drawing all contorted. The arrow flew true. Walked out to the road, made a call, and set up a light trail so a friend could help me haul him out.
Was very strange gutting that buck out that night - I could hear several coyotes moving around. Friend's young setter was nervous the entire time we were out there. Came back the next morning to find an arrow I had dropped and the gut pile was already gone.
had a friend who while on his first quail hunt,he was 10, was using a 12ga that only fired about half the time, he saw a quail, swung, pulled the trigger the gun didnt fire, he looked down the barrel and not 10 feet away was his dads head.
I was hunting coyotes one beautiful fresh snow covered morning. My brother and I were blocking for a great little weed patch that always held a coyote or two. My other brother drove to the back side of the patch and fired a .22 at a post to scare out any wiley yotes that might be present. Immediately a big beautiful male broke out and ran down the fence row that my brother was blocking. He was running right toward my brother's rifle barrel. I watched him in my scope from 300 yards away and had a great shot but I knew my brother must be on him. Finally at 50 yards from my brother's position, he ran right through my cross hairs but I let my brother have the shot. The coyote passed his position and headed across the prairie without a shot. I still had a nice shot but held off as he ran further and further. Still no shot. I ran over to my brother to see what was up. He said he had his bibs down and was answering nature's call. He said the coyote ran three feet in front of him but he didn't want to soil his bibs. That coyote is probably still wondering about our hunting tactics.
Speaking of reliable brothers, my other brother and I were deer hunting one day. He got tired sitting in his stand and curled up in the leaves at the base of his tree to catch a quick nap. He awoke when a deer touched his nose with its nose. He looked up and saw three deer standing over him and sniffing him. He gently raised his rifle and got the biggest one. It was shot from underneath and had powder burns all around the entry wound so I know he wasn't lieing.
I waslined up to a nice big buck and couldn't squeeze the trigger...safety was on!
As I was walking to my treestand one foggy morning, I noticed a draft in my pants. I had forgot to zip up my fly. Well then I noticed that I had not tied up my boot. WIth all the excitement of opening day of bow season, I just geared up and left. Well with my bow over my shoulder on a sling, I bent down to tie my boot and the biggest elk I have ever seen walks right in front of me no more than 40 yards. I'm out in the open, no cover for about 10 ft. A 10ft move is deffinatly something you dont want to try and to maneouver while an elk is standing broad side and looking straight at you.
Last year I was full draw at a nice herd bull. It had just turned shooting hours, and I bugle, I get an answer... Close. So I go to investigate, upon my arrival I see a bull standing in the creek broadside, looking the other way... You cant get more of a perfect shot at less than 30 yards than that. I just get my 35 yard sight pin on his shoulder and a damn squirrel falls out of the tree into the creek right next to him. I tought the bull was going to continue straight so I compensated and moved my bow left. He jumped and then I let my aarow fly, did he do what I thought? No in fron of god and myself and this now dead squirrel in my mind he pulls a 180 and trotts off. So here I am trying to pull my aarow out of the creek and the damn squirrel comes to within 10 ft away and does his little call, sounded like he laughed and then left. Needless to say squirell hunting was very pleasant that year.
i watch my mom one day raise her gun to shoot a doe i seen her squeeze the trigger but the gun never went off she forgot to load her gun back up after lunch
... or when someone decides to have a nature break, and a deer comes into full view, and your weapon is just out of reach.
Funny stuff!
Just yesterday i was hunting turkey in wisconsin when i decieded to have lunch. Just as i was eating my sandwich the stupid turkeys decieded to walk ten yards away from me out in the open with a clear shot. As you can guess the turkeys walked away without me being able to get to my bow just a foot away
