TRAINING OF BASIC OBEDIENCE STARTS WHEN YOU FIRST BRING YOUR PUPPY HOME. HOUSE TRAINING, TEACHING IT TO STOP A NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR WITH THE NO COMMAND, SIT, ECT. THEN YOU MOVE TO HUNTING TRAINING AND HOW MUCH TIME THIS WILL TAKE WILL DEPEND ON HOW FAST YOUR PUPPY LEARNS. BUT EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE YOUR PUPPY TRAINED THE WAY YOU WANT THEM THEN YOU STILL MUST WORK WITH THEM THEIR ENTIRE LIFE TO KEEP THEM AT THEIR PEAK PERFORMANCE. SAME AS IF YOU PLAY A SPORT YOU DON'T STOP PRACTICING AND TRAINING JUST BECAUSE YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY.
I PREFER TO BUY A PUPPY IN EARLY SPRING BECAUSE THEN I CAN GET OUT TO WORK WITH THEM ALMOST EVERY DAY WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT COLD MISERABLE WEATHER AND THEN THEY ARE READY TO HUNT IN FALL. CAUTION DURING VERY HOT DAYS OF SUMMER KEEP TRAINING SHORT AND MAKE SURE PUPPY HAS PLENTY OF WATER
GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING WITH YOUR NEW FRIEND AND PARTNER!
great comment but i have a 9 month old lab and wanted her sooner to january or febuary or march but i got her in june just interested in what people have to say
i dont really care what month i get him or her...as long as theyl make the dog ur looking for why would it matter?and every month they are being trained.
the time of year really doesn't matter as long as you train constantly. never stop. i work with my dog every day i can just because i want him to stay in shape and he loves it. not so easy to train on frozen lakes but there are other things you can do. don't sweat the small stuff.
by the time of year i meant like febuary or somewhere around there! before the hunting season and after the winter
Spring or early summer is a good time to get a dog. Training is easier to start when the weather is nicer and it is easier to train a water gog when the water is warm. Puppies are like little kids, they get cold easily and only think about getting warm when they get chilled.
Actually,I just got a black lab puppy,we took her at eight weeks old after a thorough vet check.
The training began that day, potty training, basic commands-sit,come,stay,her name of course, kennel, laydown, fetch, bring me the bird(a stuffed pheasant)we play with. She goes outside on the deck while I shoot a pellet gun,I'll go louder once she gets everything under control, the key is to remember they are puppies.I have pheasant wings and tails left over from last year that I froze.I let her chew on it, smell it, play and then I tie a string on it and get her chasing it around the yard. the next one,I drag around the yard then semi-hide it.I'll bring her out let her find the trail, keep telling her to find the bird while keeping her near the scent trail while keeping it fun till she finds it,then I'll have her bring it to me and she gets a treat.
After she gets this down,I have a farmer down the road from me that raises pheasants,I'll get one and tie it near the hedgerow w/about twenty feet of string and let her find and flush it,never letting her hurt it after a few times and she knows what she is doing,I'll turn the bird lose at the farm I hunt.
I'll do this few times before, the summer then take her out and let her find birds. It works for me,this will be the third lab I've trained this way.
Not sure if the pro's would train this way but it works and I've had two really good hunting partners w/the third in the ranks.Hope this helps, good hunting.
A great book on training dogs that walks you through the training week by week starting at 7 weeks old I believe is Water Dog by Richard Wolters. It is basically the bible for traing dogs.
Start training when he matures enough to pick you out of the background. Stop at multiple marks and blinds after maybe a month. Otherwise he'll get bored. They don't forget. Be nice to yore dawg.
