That's a broad question there.
What's your budget?
What kind of range desired?, caliber?
Are you hunting in thick spots?
Is this your first firearm?
Are you right or left handed?
Have you shot any before that you like? dislike?
Well for my answer if you are in thick stuff 30-30.I have heard of shots up to 300 yds with this rifle."not a preferable shot with this gun" I have a 30-06. A 270 is a good deer caliber. if you think you might go hunt elk also i would go for 06.A little more power.A 7mm-08 is very good too. just depends on what kind of range you want, recoil you can handle, etc, etc ....
Any decent bolt gun in 25-06 with a good quality scope will handle 98% of the shots you might get at whitetails. Savage, Marlin, Remchester, Kimber, etc, etc.
Tikka T3 270 win. I have one and I absolutely love it. I put an Leupold FXII 4 x 33 scope on it. Use the Optilock rings and bases. It will be a setup you will not regret.
As a general answer to a general question, I'd say a bolt action rifle in calibers from 25-06 to 30-06. As others have said, get a good scope. Good hunting to you.
Del in KS and country road are dead on, if your thing of hunting Elk the 30-06 is be my #1 recommendation. I've witnessed more band flops on Moose with the 30-06 with over the counter 180 grain so special soft points and over the big magnums.
But if Elk isn't on the list, the 25-06 is the best cartrideg hands down for cartridge availability (Wal-Mart etc), performance you can't tell teh difeferance between the 25-06 and Weatherby except the wallet and price of ammo doesn't break the bank.
As I said before, I sold/dumped my 300 Win Mag back in 80 and replaced it with a 25-06 and neer regreted it. The only reason I have a 338 Win Mag is because I went to Alaska and found myself backing up other Hunters
I use the Savage 111 30-06. You can get the savage in several models. I would go for the Accu Trigger models though, that was my only mistake for now. Next rifle will still be the savage 30-06, with Accu Trigger.
I stopped using a 30-06 and went to a 25-05 in 1967. I have never regretted it and I have never shot a better deer rifle. I still shoot a variety of rifles for the fun of it but am very partial to the 25-06 becuase of my experience with LOTS of deer in LOTS of conditions. If the 25-06 isn't to your liking, deer can be harvested very effectively with anything from a .243 to a .375H&H. The key is hitting them in a vital location. The 25-06 seems to make that easier because of the flat shooting / speed combined with very mild recoil.
That's a broad question there.

I'm awake but my fingers are not! LOL!
30/06 will take most things down in the Lower 48, you can't go wrong with one.
like the others have said 30.06 with a good scope is a great deer rifle.
25-06 works great
