Get a copy of of Treedog Encyclopedia by John Wick its has a lot of good tips. Starting out with a rolling cage with a live coon is best. 1. introduce them once 2. drag a trail and let them figure it out 3. turn the coon loose and let them trail it. Find someone who has a good hound that will hunt well with a young dog and hunt with them till you think that your dog is ready to try it on its own. Never hit your dog if its on tree even if its an oppossum. I've seen some guys do this and ruin a good dog, it wouldn't tree anymore. Shoot a oppossum and walk your dog by it then if it shows interest correct it then. Wick's book will help a lot and about the only resource I know of out there but I heard they closed there stores and catolog stuff so check out Nite Lite at huntsmart.com that's the only other place I know that had it.
I would say to take him around other coon dogs. Your dog will learn from the more experience coon dogs and gain some experience.
