It is as safe as you and your companions can make it. When working with firearms, the requirement for good judgment, safe conduct and attention to detail is an easily attainable goal. Make safety a personal goal and surround yourself with friends who share your priorities.

Edward is right. It's all based on the people with whom you hunt. The most important piece of hunting safety equipment resides just behind your eyeballs.

In addition to gunshots from your own party, another danger is falling, because hunters tend to walk over bad terrain and in worse weather. But I do far more dangerous things on a regular basis, like drive on highways.

Also, to a large extent hunting is as safe as you make it. But part of that is taking steps to minimize the risk posed from hunters not in your group. The biggest thing is to make sure that the guys you're with are solid, because you'll be around them a ton, but there are a (very, very, very) few guys who blast movement in the woods. If it's crowded, I'd go with more blaze orange, not less, etc.

It is you responsibility to know the people that you hunt with and that they are well trained and careful hunters. Hunting is one of the safest of the major outdoor activities. Most of the accidents happen within your own hunting party. For me to observe poor gun handling or a reckless motion only once is cause for concern and certainly I would not hunt with the offending person again.

Statistically hunting is safer than fishing, bike riding, horseback riding, playing just about any game like football or soccer, and many other things that seem much more mundane than hunting. As noted above the greatest danger is probably falling (especially from stands).

I knew a fella when talking to him was the most educated hunter with a Doctors Degree in Industrial Safety. But in the field he was the most dangerous person I ever hunted with!

My Grandson Alex is 10 now is more safety conscious than allot of Adults including those in Law enforcement, so go figure!

But no matter how safe you are, there always is that chance. My friend knew a guy who was the safest hunter going. And one day in his stand, his rifle tipped over and discharged a round into him. It turns out that his safety malfunctioned. Sometimes, accidents happen.

It is a safe sport, but there is always that chance that something could go wrong. Make sure you are always aware of what is going on in the woods. Hunting make be relaxing but is does not mean to forget safety.

Despite impressions you might receive from the media, hunting is a safe pastime, or sport, and getting safer.I give you statistics if you like numbers.
According to the National Safety Council, people who bike and play baseball -- among many other mom-and-pop sports -- are far more likely to be injured than those who hunt.
And 15 times as many people -- roughly 1,500 compared with 100 -- are likely to die in the United States each year while swimming than they are while hunting.
