Any cut on contact head will do.
I prefer Thunder Heads ,I use 125gr but you can get them 100gr and 75gr. If I were you I would stay away from Expandable or Mechanical broadheads. Expandable broadheads wound a lot of deer, because they don't have the bone smashing power of the Fixed blade or Replacable broad heads.
Doesn’t matter if it’s a young hunter or professional, I love my 3 bladed 100 grain Muzzy’s! Some day perhaps the next time out, the trophy of a LIFE TIME will step out and you want to have the best! I used to love the heavier grain broad heads, but I found to keep the velocity up and flat trajectory, the lighter the better to a point. A 28” Gold Tip with a 100 grain Muzzy blows thru them like a rifle bullet leaving a gaping wound!
One more thing!
I don’t recommend mechanical broad heads I’ve lost two deer in a row because of it. All the energy was lost on impact to open them! Arrow is at 310 fps!!
Fixed blade, low weight broadheads. 85 grain should do just fine.
i agree. 85 gr fixed. i like NAP nitrons
The new this year 1.5 inch Rage 2 blade would be perfect. They are not to be confused with over the top mechanicals which have small entrance and exit holes. Just go to the Rage website and look. My own experience indicates there is no BS about their claims. Or click my name ,at my profile page go lower right and click on VIEW ALL then page 8 and check the photo of a doe hit with a RAge. Not only are they deadly they are also more accurate than any cut on contact head.photoshttp://www.fieldandstream.com/photos/trophyroom/recent/single?pnid=1001319426#1001319426
I would choose a cut on contact broadhead based on the poundage you are shooting. Cut on contacts typically give you better penetration and I think with the amount of energy your 42 pound pound will deliver you should focus on penetration more than wound channel damage. As most guys on here will attest, shot placement with any of today's broadheads will kill a deer.
i have about a 45 lb draw, and i use 85 grain expandables
Thunder Heads haven't failed me yet!
It won't hurt to have a full weight broadhead. You might lose a tiny little bit of velocity, but you won't lose penetration at all, you might even gain. Your arrows for this bow should be light enough already, a 100 grain broadhead won't hurt a thing. 100 grain G5 Montecs will fly through anything.
I believe that you will have the best success with a 2 blade cut on contact broadhead. If kept razor sharp and your bow tuned for perfect flight you will get tremendous penetration. I've also heard great things about the new Rage that Del speaks about, I haven't tried it yet but in theory it might be the answer.
Ted Nugent's wife (Shemane) killed a Zebra with a 40-pound bow. She used Magnus Stinger BuzzCuts and it died in about 100 yards.
I would suggest either Magnus BuzzCuts or G5 Montecs. You might also try NAP HellRazors, or Muzzy Phantoms.
3 blade muzzy
Agreed with Del in KS and + 1 for you sir!!!
