Q:
Couple years ago i shot a doe in the morning and got some blood on my pants while gutting it. so that night i went out to try to get a buck. while i was sitting in my blind i heard some coytes. Once it got dark i got out of my blind and started heading back to camp. not 30 seconds later i heard a whole pack of them yippin', didnt think anything of it until as i continued to walk back to camp, and they started getting closer. I could hear their footsteps and there were a bunch of them yippin' and snarling and couldnt be 20 yard from me. then they started running, so i did to, they chased me the whole mile back to camp. i heard their footsteps the whole time but never saw them. Has this happened to anyone else?

Maybe it was that ham and cheese sandwich in your pocket that they were after! LOL
One night I heard coyotes howling close by and then scuffling all around me while I field dressed a deer. A friend helped me drag it out. His young setter had the jitters the entire time and stayed close. Came back the next morning to find a lost arrow and the gut pile was gone. Coyote tracks everywhere. Figure they see enough gut piles to know that there is an easy meal if they are patient.
Oh ... last thing you want to do is run.
Freaky. I hope the yotes in Ohio don't get that bold.
No but I bet you were pretty scared. I know i would be. You should have just opened fire on htem.
haha ya i was only like 14 when that happened, i had to check my pants when i got back to camp. and ya i have seen two deer lost to coyotes that were left overnight to die, the only thing left of both of them was the head and spine. It doesnt take them that long to find a down animal. they are getting pretty bad where i hunt, good thing i bought a nice .223!!! haha
Not coyote's but a group of us was "followed" off the mountain one night by a LARGE Mt. lion. We saw it later that night going to town. He was as long nose/to rear(not tail) as a full size F-350 Super Cab !
Guessing I'd say he was in the 175/200 lb range.
they must have thought you were an injured deer. thats pretty scary
they must have thought you were an injured deer
Worst thing you can do is run! If you had fallen you would have been dead probably. You should have shot one the rest would probably run off or stopped to eat the other one. Unless you can get up a tree never run.
Now 7 years later i realize that running was not the best choice, but i was a 14 year old kid scared, and i couldnt see any of them to shoot, believe me i would have.
This would suggest that deer blood might be used to good effect as bait to attract coyotes to predator hunters. It could be put out in the form of fresh venison, if not raw blood.
Of course, this leaves open the question of what else it might attract. Bears have been known to smell fresh blood for miles. It might also be illegal in some states.
Yotes have circled the carcass while I was dressing on more than a few occasions, and I've seen just little glimpses of them as the dematerialize back into the cover when I'm approaching the kill. Sneaky little bastards. They probably thought you were an injured deer running off, going by the smell and the slowness lol. They probably would have turned tail as soon as they figured you were a human, of if they already knew (likely), they were just playing chase like all dogs do. I doubt they intended you to go the way of young canadian folk singers.
I carry a handgun on me for any emergency reason just the sound might discourage them if nothing else. sounds like it was something interesting.
Yup me too, now that i have a handgun its on my hip, just in case.
Never leave home without one!
i was almost attacked by one, i was i michagan with my cusin and we were sleeping outside.we had a nice fire going and my cusins dog just runs out into the horse stadium (about an acre of just grass with a wooden fence around it) and we hear 2 growls and a low squeel, then the dog comes walking back and it didnt sound like the dogs squeel so we were wondering maybe a coyote, well the next day we looked and we saw 2 sets of tracks, i couldnt think of another explination.
I've heard a lot of people talking about how much braver coyotes are these days. Not many people hunt them anymore and they're a lot "gutsier". We've got a pack thats in our field, and they aren't even scared of gun fire anymore. Also heard of a pack of coyotes attacking a woman in Canada i think on the news a few weeks ago. So anyone who reads this, lets help out and shoot some coyotes!
Ive never had anything like that happen, but now that you said that I will be way more carefull, cause I would have never thought about it..
and I agree with Farmboy...lets shoot some of them
