Never had a bear sniff my face but I've wrestled with tigers, gotten hugs from a jaguar and a leopard, had a lion within inches of me that just sat and stared like "maybe I'll eat him, maybe not". Wrangled a 16' python from a wooden crate into a big duffle bag then sat and watched TV that night with a 7 foot boa on my back.
No, but had one growling at me at about 3 feet away in the dark. Was walkiing to my deer stand in the early morning. Turned last corner and there he was. No light, camera flash was only light I had with me. Got a nice picture. Never been so scared. Black Bear. Had another 7 feet eye to eye fifteen feet off the ground. I was in a tree stand he was standing on a rock formation right next to me. 15 foot drop off between us. Stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity. Than he went and sat on the trail I had to walk out on until after dark. I was a bit nervous leaving the stand. He was 10-20 yards off the trail when I walked by. Did not see him just heard him moving.
My two friends and I were camping up in the Adirondacks for a fishing trip, and we wanted to see some bears. It was getting dark, and we decided it would be a good night to stay up and watch for bears. So, we put a stick of butter on the picnic table, to make sure that we would see one. Just when we were getting up from the table, to head to our car to watch for bears, a black bear, which weighed about 350lbs. came into our campsite. He walked over to our big food storage bin, and started banging on it. Then, he came over to the table, where we were frozen, just watching him. Then, he came right over and sniffed my face, less than 4 inches away. All I could think about was, "I just ate chicken and marshmallows....but this is really cool!" When he turned his head, I yelled, and my friends shined their flashlight at him. That startled him enough to scare him out of our campsite. During the week we stayed, we saw 8 bears in our campsite. If you want to share my experience, go camping at Limekiln Lake, Adirondacks NY
Yes mark i remember that day very clearely everyone left to go to the bathroom that night all our family members then we looked behind us saw the bear approaching us. I was next to your brother in the middle of you two then the bear decided he was going to walk up to us and snif your face. It was shocking and the bear was only about a foot from my face!
in rifle season of '07 i had an 8 point buck raking a tree not 2 feet from where i was sitting. Yes i was sleeping, and the thing is he was a 135 class deer. as soon as i saw him he saw me and took off. havnt seen him sense
I did have an eight point buck sniff my boot while out scouting a week before bow hunting. I saw the buck heading in my direction as he stepped out of a corn field. I laid down in a row of cut hay next to the corn and the buck walked up sniffed my boot and sprang staight up in the air. Once he returned to earth he ran back into the corn. I never saw him at all during bow season that year. Probably still running...
You are very lucky that it only sniffed your face. I can't believe you guys were luring the bears in though. I'm not criticizing, but just so you know in Ontario there is a real problem with bears that have fed on human food. They act as if all humans should feed them, and when someone doesn't, they get angry and volent. This usually leads to the police or a C.O. getting called in to kill the bear before it kills or injures someone. Glad that you are alright and that nothing serious came of it.

I think I would be feeling very fortunate if he only sniffed my face and didn't look at me as a snack. It's good that you're OK.
