Either your mind, because you gotta keep your mind right or it would have to be a knife... can do about anything with a knife, light a fire, cut some wood, and even use it to eat and kill something with as a spear... just about everything.

in the jungle ,most people say a machete
on frozen tundra both are useless a good knife will serve you well wherever you go, except the airport.

An axe is better than a knife. Even if it's broken it still has many uses. If you break a knife blade, its almost useless.
