Colorado Skeet Shooters Hit By Lightning

From The Greeley Tribune:
Josh Renuch, 32, was one of two men [struck by lightning] shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, said Margie Martinez, spokeswoman for the Weld County Sheriff’s Office. She identified the other man as Brent Kuehne, 32, of Greeley.
Martinez said the two men were . . . shooting skeet at a farmhouse 2 to 3 miles east of Lucerne. She said the incident occurred just before a heavy thunderstorm moved through the Greeley area.
“There was no storm out there at the time, but obviously, there was lightning.
“Apparently, a skeet had just been launched, and the lightning may have hit the shotgun because it pretty much exploded in (Renuch’s) hands,” Martinez said.

thats wierd. how many times do people get struck like hunting and how does a shotgun blow up
Any piece of metal that's raised above your head is a lightning rod. Golfer's know this, and I get off the water during a storm, fishing rods make an excellent lightning rod. I think umbrellas are stupid. If there were directions for one how would it read, 1. Wait for thunderstorm 2. Open till fully locked in place 3. Point top metal rod at sky and get underneith.
Saw this one on the Weather Channel, before you posted it. Are they both O.K. ?
To Peter: Eletricity sets off the primer's(all at once).
I've seen it done with "stactic" eletricity, which basicly is what "lightning" is.
Sounds like the fellers are mostly alright-the web news said the guy holding the shotgun is still in critical condition. On the bright side, the blown up shotgun will make one heck of a souvenier.
Sad to here. But that is some bad luck... getting struck by lightning and having your shotgun explode on you
why would you be shooting before a storm? tie a kite to your gun and we will call you benjamin franklin
