Florida Is Latest State To Ban Fish Pedicures

From The Miami Herald:

In a preemptive strike, the Florida Board of Cosmetology has put its foot down against employing tiny flesh-sucking fish to nibble dead skin and thick calluses from the toes and heels of clients.

While there have been no confirmed reports of the procedure being used, Florida salons had begun inquiring whether it was legal, said Alexis Antonacci, spokeswoman for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. . . .

The issue for state regulators is not animal cruelty but sanitation, Antonacci said.

I don't see what the big problem is. They are trying new ways to improve the medical field. Let them try it.

How the hell is small fish eating dead skin a sanitation issue. Apparently fish poop is a biological hazard. Somebody call Al Gore and get him to help rid the world of these biohazards of the natural world. More bureaucracy limiting our ever dwindling freedoms.

I remember reading about this when it first hit the news. I thought the whole thing was kind of cool (if not a little gross).

I guess the issue the state had was that there is no way to clean the tanks (and the fish) in a way that conforms to the very rigid standards set by state health board for salon equipment. While this seems like just another example of government being overly meddlesome and creating rules and standards where they aren't necessary, I have been informed by female friends and family members that there is a significant potential health risk at some salons for infection, and there have been a number of highly publicised cases of infection resulting from improper sanitation that resulted in amputation or even death.

Don't really have an opinion, but just some additional info...

Has anyone taken the careers and feelings of the fish into account? I mean, here you have all these little carp going to beauty school preparing for careers in a salon and their jobs and futures are yanked from under them. Think about their little fry that they are trying to provide for, their feelings of inadequacy and failure over being laid off and unemployed, and all during a bad economy. I feel for the little guys!

There is now way that small fish eating dead skin can be an issue, there's better things for the gov. to do then ban fish pedicures
