Obama Pledges $78.5 Million To Fight Invasive Carp, But Won't Close Chicago Locks

By Online Editors

From FoxNews.com
Navigational locks and gates in Chicago-area waterways crucial for shipping may be opened less frequently than usual under a $78.5 million campaign to prevent Asian carp from overrunning the Great Lakes, federal officials said Monday.

The plan falls short of closing the navigational structures entirely, as demanded by Michigan and five other Great Lakes states. They fear the locks will provide an opening to the lakes for the giant carp, which some scientists say could devastate the region's $7 billion fishing industry.

But the Obama administration described the plan as part of an effective strategy for keeping the invasive fish at bay while long-term biological controls are developed. The government said it would take 25 actions to slow the advance of the carp, which can reach 4 feet long and 100 pounds.

The sad part is that it is our money that they are pissing away.Question will a telephone kill the things or one of those electronic shocking devices?I'm not to sure of pouring poison in the water.I mean i don't have any thing personal against the people of Chicago but i don't think i would drink the water.Possibly a bounty on them and let the commerical fishers use gill nets on them. But then you have to worry about collateral damage to other fish.Close the locks and leave them closed. If they have to be used pump them dry and insure they are no live carp in the lock before allowing any passages.

My vote is to weld the locks shut then backfill the canal. The carp will get to the Great Lakes by bait buckets if nothing else, but the more we slow them the longer we will have to find a way to beat them. Disgusting how they are spending $78.5 million to just monitor the carp invasion instead of spending that much to actually stop it. Here's another idea-- let's fill the Welland Canal too so we can re-isolate the lakes like they are supposed to be.

Yet another example of the complete and utter buffoon's we have running this country....throw money at our problems instead of coming up with viable solutions. God forbid anyone use common sense to solve problems and prevent further damage. Absolutely sickening!

Obama can keep his Chicago backers happy while delaying the response to the next administration. You can bet that this will become an election issue. Unfortunately, he lacks the guts or the will to do the right thing. The locks should be closed and remain closed until they can come up with a solution. $7B in Great Lakes revenues in peril compared to $300M of Chicago shipping business. This could go down in history as one of America's biggest political calamities.

It happens all the time in the west, invasive species move in, the state poisons the entire water. Kills all species, starts new. Until an idiot releases "baitfish" and introduces a new species. It is hard to face it, but it is the only way to rid of a species. There is no way to keep a species from moving, unless you kill everything. In my eyes it is worth it, but not a popular decision (Obama will NEVER make an unpopular difficult decision). I understand why in most states in the west it is illegal to fish with any live minnows. I don't understand why other states have not adopted this reg, it prevents the spread of invasive species. Fishing is not a priority, and it shows.

babsfish4life, But can bodies of water as large as the great lakes be wiped out with chemicals and started over again?

You must treat the bodies of water before the carp reach the great lakes. I don't believe that you could treat waters as big as the great lakes, you are right. That is why I think it must be done now, not later. Once they reach the great lakes, I don't believe that there is anything anybody can do except fish somewhere else. Federal government is useless at this point, they take so long to get anything done (paperwork, lawsuits and research) that by the time the actually get around to doing something it is going to be too late.

Michigan and the other five states in the lawsuit need to round up about 20 big tankers, fill them full of Rhotone and cruise through the locks in Chicago and dump Rhotone all the way to the gulf of mexico!! Sorry about your bad luck southern states but you all had many chances to stop them years ago!!! If you don't like it,go cry to Obama, maybe he'll promise you something.

There are two things I am not sure about. I cannot see how it is possible to stop the migration of the asian carp to the Great Lakes. Stopping the fish is easy but what about the eggs and minnows that can travels in dozens of different ways.

Second. I am not convinced of the enviormental impact these fish will play on the Great Lakes system. Yes, I know what "they" say but "they" have 78.5 million reasons to make the senerio as worse as possible.

I know the zebra muscle was suppose to wipe out the Great Lakes but 20 years later, it has survived. Let's not forget the common carp is an invasive species stocked in the late 1800's. I'm sure the biologist were concerned that these carp would suck the spawning beds try of any eggs.

Inside the Great Lakes there are many, many diffent eco systems that different fish inhabit. IMO the asain carp will find it's nitch and compete with a small population of fish but otherwise be harmless.

These Asian carp spread unlike anything else and pretty much starve out other species. They are plankton feeders so that affects the entire food chain (also makes them hard to catch on hook and line). The silver carp jumping issues are apparently only in shallow water.

Perhaps the biggest impact could be on the streams and rivers that feed into the lakes, where our anadromous fish go to spawn - the salmon and steelhead, for instance.

They say they are already on the lakes but in too small a number to take hold and effectively reproduce. Hopefully, the biologists are right. Attempting to rid them completely would mean poisoning the entire Mississippi River system, including feeder streams.

Timely report, though the author made a wrong point. They found one carp above the barrier after poisoning, but the dead fish were expected to sink rather than float:
