Backyard Buck
By Kim Hiss

Blog reader Laura Benjamin from Colorado sent this great photo of a buck that she says comes "visiting" outside her home office door on a regular basis. When he stopped by this particular day in December, Laura slid the door open to take a photo, and her cat ran out. Though she thought the cat was, "a goner for sure," as you can see, the deer didn't seem to mind the encounter. Thanks to Laura for being so quick with a camera! -K.H.

How Cool!! I'd be thinking, 'Come on Shed!' Lol That'd be the easiest shed hunt ever.
Lately I've been having a few Does come by my bedroom window during the night, which is neat, although I'm thinking they're trying to pattern me or something. ;)
You gotta love yard deer!
I'm suprised the cat went outside! I wish I deer like that outside my door!
He's definitely checking out the cat though!
Awesome picture. We too have deer that come right up in the back yard trying to steal a bite of the horse's hay. Friday night we came home and there were three of them walking right up our driveway.
Winter here in Michigan has been brutal for the deer. It snowed and then froze early making it almost impossible for the deer to feed on the fields. You could see where they tried to dig thru the snow but it has been tough. On a walk to my blind I could see where they were eating on the cedar trees and that always seemed to be a last resort for food.
Sunday I was shoveling at the camp and I threw a shovel full of snow. Looking down I saw two legs in my path. I continued to shovel and uncovered a little fawn that had obviously starved to death right there within 5 yards of the camp. Hadn't been there long as it was not frozen solid. Made me sad for the little fella.
The whole situation just gets your mind thinking about the strong surviving and the weak not. I am sure with a winter like this, there are going to be many winter kill. Sad, but truely a fact of life.

It's a real crack-up. We've got probably a herd of 10-15 who wander up and down the streets and through the backyard. I look out my sliding glass door of my home office and find a big doe licking up the bird seed that falls on the concrete pad. In the afternoon, they all settle down in the backyard like a bunch of big dogs. It's wonderful to be able to enjoy them all so close. And yes, I've got my eyes peeled for the sheds! Laura B.
Judy, that sure is a sobering encounter with a fact of life in the wild. On the other hand, Laura, thanks for making me laugh out loud -- those does can be sneaky! -K.H.
That's a sad tale Judy. It's been a long hard winter for sure and its only January.
It doesn't seem like the cat minds too much either! Awesome mulie and awesome picture! :)
I love looking out the window and seeing the deer. Every once in a while they will come into the yard- a few years ago a doe and her fawns would be up near the house sniffin around.
Judy- Sorry that you had to see that little fawn like that, it would make me so sad!!
That's exactly the reason that I start putting out corn around this time of year!
Great photo! Late in the summer one of my elderly friends said it was going to be a hard winter, as the apple trees were overflowing with fruit. She told me it was God's way of taking care of the animals to help them survive a harsh winter. I thought it was cute, but after this winter so far where we have snow, then 1/2" of ice and more snow on the ground and single digit and below zero temps, I can't help but thinking this isn't just an old wives tale.
Wow, did the cat investigate the deer, or just go about its way? Great picture!
