Discussion Topic: NSSF Calls Out Paper On “Permits To Kill Hunters”
We all know there isn’t much love lost between hunters and anti-hunters, but nobody wishes anybody any real harm—except when some crazy anti-hunter does wish us real harm and a newspaper has the poor taste to print his wish. Then it’s the hunters, in this case the National Shooting Sports Foundation, who take the high ground.
From the NSSF website:
Shameful is the word that comes to mind for the Burlington Free Press and its decision to print a reader's anti-hunting letter. . . . that was written in response to the Vermont paper's story about the opening of moose hunting season. . . .
Here's the letter:
Take a Few Hunters Along with the Moose
On this beautiful day we learn that about 1,251 hunters are taking to the woods with legal permits to "pursue prized quarry." Certainly the members of various humane organizations do not approve. I suggest that before the next annual killing season, other residents be awarded legal permits to kill hunters who will be out to kill these beautiful, non-destructive animals. Or the government could just rule out all this primitive killing.
The NSSF asked for an apology and got one, as well an Op-ed from Wayne LaRoche, commissioner of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

Actually, letting this anti's letter get printed might be a good thing. To any rational reader it highlights the warped mentality and lack of knowledge of the writer. And kudos to Wayne LaRoche for taking this great opportunity to respond with an intelligent and educational reply.
MLH wrote exactly what I was thinking. This crazy comment by an animal rights extremist highlights how misinformed and over the edge these guys really are. The response by LaRoche was excellent.
what these people don't understand is that those hunters they would be hunting shoot back and probably shoot far better than they do! i say sell those tags and let's figure it all out there and not in town. load up!
Take a buddha pill everyone. It's just a jerk shooting off his mouth. We've seen people in some blogs (hmm) hinting that the same should be done in D.C. so try to view it as the guy is just another blowhard. I'd also guess he's getting some scornful looks from his neighbors.
Give the anti's enough rope, and they'll eventually hang themselves (pun intended). Their argument is based purely on emotion, while LaRoche's op-ed was reasoned and supported with research. This self-righteous idiot actually did hunters a big favor.
I think the letter writer was trying to be sarcastic- in his thought process he was trying to show the "evils of hunting" by suggesting a hunt of the hunters. I think he failed miserably, and offended just about everyone who read the piece. So rather than getting mad by pass even and take one step ahead, take a young person hunting. Introduce a non-hunter(note, most people who do not hunt are not anti's, they have not yet experienced the thrill) to one of our favorite pastimes.
You will be doing your self and our sport a favor!
I would have no issue with the animal rights groups if they just would deal with the abuse and overpopulation of domesticated animals. The problem I personally have when the Antis talk about wildlife is they are driven by emotion and feelings instead of science and research and that leads to hate, which is never good and always misdirected. I would gladly donate to the Humane Society if their mission statment didn't state that they wanted to end all forms of hunting.
Great Comment bjohnston.
No issue can properly be analyzed without and objective view. What we see from the animal right community often reflects that shortcoming.
For the record, I believe that while they have similar names, your local Humane Society is completely separate from the US Humane Society. The local groups actually focus on aiding our local domestic animals and not on hyperbole filled endeavors against fair chase hunting.
Hmmm, an anti hunter supporting hunting humans? Seems kind of ironic to me.
True to their core they feel animals have more rights than humans. Poor confused souls they are!
I find it amazing how they can be so against killing of animals but for that of people.....can't say how many "hunt the wolf hunters" remarks I have received, and "I love hunting accidents" is another of their favorite lines...
Sick twisted people....to much multi-media exposurer has melted their brains...
The irony is so thick you couldn't shoot a 30.06 through it.
Hopefully, these anti-hunters will be the same jokers who live for paintball. You know, play acting at being soldiers. Saddle up, troops. Let's play Infantry!
The personification of animals is more important to them than the well-being of fellow human beings. Yet with all their 'love' for animals they can't point to very many things they have ever done to help non-domesticated animals or their habitat, or conservation.
The irony thickens as they ride off into the sunset in their Priuses. It's nice to know they are saving the world......
If they only had a f****** clue.
The killing of an animal (which does not have "higher brain function") is called hunting/trapping.
The killing of a human ( which DOES have " higher brain function" well most of us anyway) is called ... Oh yea
MURDER! ! !
I'm willing to let the anti's "hang them selves" I just want to tie the knot and pick the tree.
Sorry folks, but they just ...
Vegitarianism should be considered a religion, and an oppressive and irrational one at that, one one considers how so many vegans insist on imposing their prejudice on others and continually lobby to impose their opinions on others no so minded. The person who wrote the antihunting bit suggesting permits be issued for hunting hunters is likely some chippie from the university in Burlington, who should be focussing on her education, but instead wastes her parents money flogging her half baked dogma. (I say She because most of the Ditsey headed protein starved militant vegans I've met were emaciated female college students, call it profiling) I have met such types who would impose their dietary preferences on their pet cats! You wanna see an unhappy kitty, see one condemned to Veganism by their demented keeper! Such delusional people live in little Disneylands in their own heads and really ought to have such suicidal notions dispelled.
Good point Bella, the only issue I have is that my mama taught me to respect other peoples religious point of view, and I have a hard time respecting vegans. They remind me of those who prefer to play in traffic, you need to get them out of the road.
The logic of the anti-hunters goes against nature.
A Moose when feeling threatened will charge you and stomp your guts in the ground because it's in his best interest.
A cougar will attack a hiker because it feels it's easy prey and it's in his best interest
A bear will attack and eat you if you come between its cubs or food source because it's in its best interests
Hunters will harvest game and use the meat to sustain themselves and their families because it's in their best interest.
And if someone puts myself or my family in great bodily harm I will shoot them because it's in our best interest
This is the way of nature.
This guy obviously never had someone take him hunting or fishing as a kid
Sad.

That letter reminds me of the "BUY LOCAL" bumper sticker I saw on a foreign car.
Now would this be a draw hunt?Us aginst them?Would it be more cost effective to mount a antihunter?v\s a roundassed politician? How close would you be able to set up a tree stand to a peta parking lot?Would it be legal to bait the politicians with real money?Imean really if this guys brains were tnt he couldnt blow his nose.LMAO.
As upsetting as it is to read this, I feel sorry for the person who wrote that letter. They've never heard the sounds of the forest stirring to life, felt the crunch of the leaves underneath their boots, or viewed these beautiful animals in their natural environment. vermontbuckhunters hit it on the head- just one day in the woods can do wonders for the soul and can change someone's opinions on hunters.
Tasteless and dispicable the stunts that antis pull.
They need to lay off the bong water and tofu.
Way to go NSSF... My hats off to y'all
The writer of this reply by the nssf seems to have a very childish attitude and also makes him/her out to be the best player on our team by acting out with words in such a simple" death to all hunters!" approach
I agree with several of you guys. This anti should be locked in a hospital for evaluation and then tried for attempted murder becuse by writing that colomn in the news paper they are only adding to the conflict between the antis and us hunters, if this keeps going on someone is going to be severly hurt over an issue that shouldnt be any trouble. I think we all need to set a goal as hunters to take someone with us who has never been hunting in this next month and let them experience this amasing opportunity.
what bothers me is the fact that so few people give us hunters a bad name. The solution to this problem is not sparking back in anger but to spread the idea of hunting as a time for hunters to enjoy themselves in the woods we don't have 2 harvest a deer to have fun.
I think I'm in love with Bella!
So many other great comments as well! And with so many of you taking the high and intellectual road, I feel obligated to ballance things out.
I'd welcome a scenario in which a bunch of anti's take to the woods to hunt me. We still have the right of self-defense don't we? What better chance for me to "defend myself" over and over and over...! ;-)
Seriously, what chance would they have? I know they think we're all knuckle-dragging morons and that nothing could be simpler than stomping into the woods and blasting defenselss forest creaturs AND that they are so much smarter and superior that there would be little danger to themselves in hunting us down. But REALLY! Can you imagine?
Vegitarians,I can't stand e'm and their anti-hunting theories!PETA and all their little imitators should go off and protest the actual crimes and leave the great American sporting traditions, the ones in American feilds and streams,to hunt and fish without worry of vegan protest!
hol potatoes those guys are nuts!! Everybody loves hunting. its fun just to get out there, shoot some guns, and be with friends! Theres no harm in that. Plus the animals are over-populated anyway!
