Two Michigan Troopers May Be Fired For Poaching

By Dave Hurteau

Speaking of poaching, should the penalty be stiffer for police officers who do their poaching while on duty?

From the Cheboygan Daily Tribune:

Two Michigan State Troopers who served brief jail sentences and were reassigned after admitting to poaching deer while on duty have lost their jobs, pending an arbitration hearing.

“There has been a recommendation for termination, and each will have a hearing as part of the arbitration process,” Detective/Sgt. Christopher M. Luty, vicepresident of the Michigan State Police Troopers Association, confirmed Friday. “Nothing is really official until that is complete.”

Here in Northern NY we had a DEC officer caught by State Police poaching while on duty.
He was allowed to retire with benefits intact.
Life ain't fair.

I was in Law Enforcement for 17 years, and even though I am human, and make mistakes just like everyone else, I believed that professionaly I was held to/and held myself to, a higher standard.
Personaly I believe that a wise old Buck,(or any animal for that matter) deserves a better chance then to be shot buy someone who didn't pay there dues to have the privlege to shoot it, give the animal a fair chance. Law Enforcement or not I think poachers, and roadhunters are the lowest form of life. They became what they were sworn to fight, and should be made an example off.

Fire them, that's all! Put their ass in jail. Cops seem to be given the benefit of the doubt on duty/off duty. Now make them pay. They know better.

Two State Trooper who are supposed to uphold and enforce the laws of the state of Michigan get caught poaching while on duty and in uniform.---- Being from Michigan and realizing that a lot of state police are getting laid off anyhow, the only fitting punishment that comes to mind would be for each of them to have to pluck the hairs and rub ointment on Jennifer Granholm's ( Michigans grotesque govenor)facial moles, morning-after lunch-and right before bedtime for 2 years each.

They should absolutely lose their jobs - they have done exactly what they are supposed to prevent. Granted, they aren't game wardens, but either way their job is to uphold the law, not take advantage of the shield they have on their uniform...

They broke the law... no questions about it, they should be fired. I personally think that they should get an extra little something just because they are suppose to be "officers" that kids and people can look up to and trust to do the right thing. They are ambassadors... what they do affects the outlook on all the officers like them.

It's nice to see our tax dollars going to good use!

If this had happened in their off duty time, I don't think they should risk being fired any more than you or I. Since it appears that they were on-duty when this happened, I'd say that nearly any company would let you go for hunting on the clock whether it was legal or not. I don't have a lot of sympathy for this.

An illegal activity while on duty, fired for sure.
I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to have a law that holds any public official to a higher standard. Something like "Violation of the Public Trust" .
Pay for play, kickbacks, bribery, misuse of public funds, insider trading and things like that should call for a few years in jail on top of confiscation off all profits connected to the illegal activity.
From local representative right up to our President, I'd really like that.

Once again, a story that proves out the old adage, "many of those who wear The Badge are themselves marginal criminals."

They sound like a couple of real cowboys...I'm with lawman328-
I spent 5 years of my life in the police scene and listened to gripes how cops get away with everything illegal under the sun. I was responsible for only my actions not every blue cap and badge walking around town. Fire these guys, fine them, make an example out them; Whatever the powers that be will decide.
Remember, cops are just people like anyone else, this doesn't give them the right to break laws, but they will because they are human and will make mistakes.

Makes me wonder if they were honest about the tickets that they were giving out when they were working. Were they being dishonest on other parts of their job too? Ever since I was a kid I was taught to trust cops...these butt munchers give cops a bad name.
