BuckTracker: Mystery Monster

By Scott Bestul

It is certainly no mystery that Iowa produces some gargantuan bucks each fall. The buck posted here, however, is something of an enigma…at least to me. I’ve seen several photos of this tremendous whitetail in recent weeks, all with the same title; "Lockridge Monster." No details as to who the hunter is, where in Iowa it was taken, or what the beast might score. Some who’ve forwarded the pics to me claim the woman in the photo is the lucky shooter, but thus far no one can confirm this.

So once again I’m asking for help. If you know any details about this amazing buck, please chime in. I’d love to hear more about it!

On a personal note, I am leaving tomorrow for my first whitetail hunt in Alabama. Looking forward to not only seeing this wonderful state, but also to escaping another cold front that threatens the upper Midwest. Call me a wimp, I don’t care!

Look at the size, beams and tines are massive. I think the scoring system may be a bit skewed. Other deer will score higher and yet not be so impressive. God bless digital cameras and computers. I've seen more monster bucks this year than ever before. I guess these deer have been taken each year and we never new it.

This buck is huge all-around; the tines are thicker than most antler bases! The final score might not do it justice but for eye appeal it's at the top. It has mass, width, and height - the stickers just give it character in my book. I hope a story surfaces soon about this great animal, he must have been a legend where he roamed!

That is a spectacular rack. Great buck is better than a trophy wife. They only cost you money in the beginning and they stay beautiful forever.

RE: Herbie

Firearms season in Alabama starts on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs until the end of January I believe.

I am originally from WI but I now live in GA and hunt in AL. I have grown to love deer hunting in AL. The mild temps make staying in your stand all day pleasant. The long season gives you time to actually work the woods. Coming from WI with the traditional 10 gun deer season accentuated by extended seasons and extra antlerless hunts I realize just how much government interferes with hunting up there. In AL it is a part of your life for the fall and early winter. I am not stuck trying to get my deer in a week and often being forced to take vacation time to do it. Kudos to AL for letting hunters hunt. Enjoy your trip it is a beautiful state to explore.

I never get tired of seeing these giant bucks. Congratulations!!! I love deer hunting, just being away from the rat race of every day life in a tree hoping one of these giants might walk by keeps me going back year after year.

This buck was shot in southeast Iowa. The daughter originally hit a leg and her dad tracked the deer and shot it on his property. I heard they have been tracking it for 3 years and finally got him. What a monster, I know I would have to clean out my shorts if that animal walked under my stand...And the best part of the story is, there is no controversy.

I don't see any comments answering your questions, so here it goes...

Floyd Peck is on the left and his daughter Haddie is on the right. Shooting the deer was a joint effort due to a badly placed first shot. This is by far the biggest deer they have ever taken, but their "vet shed" is a testament to the caliber of deer that wander that part of the world.
