Oregon - Davis Lake
Jerks ruined the trout fishing in this prized 3,900-acre flies-only fishery by illegally dumping largemouth bass that wasted no time spawning up a storm. Go ahead, be mad, but seize the opportunity to hook into a nice fat bass. Cartop boats or personal pontoons are required to fly cast troutlike streamers effectively to the north-side rushes. Some big trout still survive at the mouth of Odell Creek. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Bend, 541-388-6363; dfw.state.or.us
Guide's Tips
Species: Largemouth Bass
Guide: Jim Dexter, Cascade Guides and Outfitters-The Hook Fly Shop, 541-593-2358
Rig Specifics: 9-foot, 8-weight fly rod, intermediate sinking line, using a black rabbit or marabou worm with a bright chartreuse front.
Quick Tip: Be persistent and stick to it. Most of the lake is reeds, so you could cast a fly and be a foot away from a fish without knowing it.
Where to Fish: Lava Flow Campground on the northeast corner of the lake.
