Rib Bones

Uploaded on November 08, 2009

i recently havested my first deer with my bow (AWESOME), but now i have a question. My shot placement was pretty good, my arrow hit about 3/4 way up the body but never entered the chest cavity. It rode up a rib and hit the spine. Has anyone ever had any similair thing happen to them?

Similar yes, I have hit a deer that was quartering away from me behind the front should mid cavity. Instead of penetrating the rib cage, the Large fixed bladed broadhead glanced off, went between the front should and the rib cage and slit the jugular on the way out of the bottom side of the neck. Lots of blood but I was very lucky. I happen to me twice and one year. Time to switch broad heads I guess, it usually happens with mechanical broad heads not opening up completely.

Hope it helps,

thanks stickthower, thats what i was looking for. I was using fixed blade heads, and i think that is all helped alot. I didn't realize that could happen, but i think it seals the deal on my mechanical debate. I don't know if i would have haverested that deer if a mechanical, especially the fold back type, had hit that bone and deflect. thanks

About half-way up the body is ideal

First off congrats on your first bow kill.
Second,

Having an arrow "ride up the rib" sounds strange. The arrow inflight is likely on a downhill arc and I will assume you were in a treestand shooting down. My best guess is that you arrow may have hit something and deflected up just prior to striking the deer. I've shot a few (understatement) deer with a bow and have never experienced a defelction such as your, particually with fix blades. What brand broadhead? What fps are you shooting? Could it have deflected?

i agree, i thought it was strange as well. I cant explain it. I was using muzzy mx-3. I am not sure of my fps, but i shoot a mathews switchback xt,#72 @ 28.5", with carbon express maxima hunter 350's. I would have assumed that i had plenty of speed and penetration. The entrance wound was where i wanted because of the downhill shot(treestand) about 2" behind the shoulder. Who knows so far my expierience has been with whitetails, there are no guarantees. Sometimes strange things happen, i guess just practice all you can and hope you have some luck on your side as well. thanks for the input buckhunter.
