I personally like Primos line of calls. The Freak is in my opinion the best slate call out there. Primos is the only brand of mouth calls I have ever used and I don't have one complaint, so there is no reason to try others.
I agree that if somethin works why change it, but I also think you are shortchangin yourself by not trying anything else. Personally I like Down N Dirty outdoors mouthcalls. I also tried 3 or 4 brands before I settled on them but will still use the other ones to get different sounds. The more sounds you can make the better you are going to do is how I feel, so I like having the abillity to use different tones, and raspyness. Just cuz somethin works still get out there and experiment with someothers you never know.
M.A.D. calls makes a diaphragm call named the Shipp Wreck, influenced by champion caller Don Shipp. It's a three reed with a two-part cut. Sounds amazing and turkeys have loved it. Pittman Game Calls also makes some nice mouth calls. My favorite is the four reed Black Diamond. Beautiful sound, crisp yelps, Preston Pittman makes top notch diaphragm calls.
I no doubt have a deep connection to my M.L. Lynch box calls. I have lots of calls, but seem to always rely on a certain 3. All from M.L. Lynch, the World Champion, Raspy Hen and Fool Proof. As of lately i have had great success with the Raspy Hen, especially in with Merriam's in Wyoming and South Dakota. All three have given me great success in my home state, Pennsylvania. I found The Raspy Hen to be great for getting the boss Hen's attention. In the fall this works great and in the Spring, Oh My does the gobblers get hot and heavy. If i"m not having much luck, going in a soft tone with the World Champion or Foolproof seem to work well.
My own boxes and slate calls. HS Strut on mouth calls
I've got 2 box calls that were handmade by an inmate, both have a real good sound, and a freak slate and a steel and ceramic. Has anyone heard of canadays custom calls?
I like the calls from Bully's Game Calls. http://www.bullysgamecalls.com
Their new Hookbuster 3 is awesome....It's on page 74 of the March issue of F&S. It's a sweet call.
primos a frame diaphram and ol betsy slate call
My favorite box is a homemade scratch box, favorite slate is a Cody and I use HS Strut, Knight and Hale and MAD mouth calls with no particular preference.
My new favorite is a beautiful one of a kind box call made for me by Beekeeper. If you can get him to make you one do it and yours will be the best call in your hunting club. This call not only works great it is also beautiful to look at. I will post photos when time allows. Bee, you have outdone every other call I have ever held.
The only one Ive ever used are Primos mouth call the A-frame series and they worked great for me
Box Call: Lynch's Foolproof
I have had a HS Strut round slate for years and the turkeys still like the sound of it.
Knight & Hale diaphragms, Perfection slate, Lynch World Champion box.
An old Lynch Foolproof from the 70's. The sound just gets better with age. Quaker Boy's Boat Paddle when I want something really loud to cover our hills and hollows here. Quaker Boy mouth calls.
knight and hale wet willy box call, primos power crystal, qauker right touch slate, H.S. raspy hen and primos diamond cutter diaphrams. do most of the dirty work with the diamond cutters and slate.
There is a taxidermist in my home town that started making glass turkey calls. I gave a turkey safety talk to a group of young turkey calling contestents for him last summer and he gave me one. The striker was no good but I had one and the glass sounds pretty good. I can't wait to use it this spring. He made the wood out of walnut.
I love my Primos Box Cutter box call. I can almost always get a gobbler to gobble to it even if he won't gobble for anything else.
H.S. Strut Ringzone slate has been my most reliable, my primos box cutter sounds really nice and almost works as a locator. Sarge-that sounds like a very nice call, post a pic.
