Fly Fishing
Here is how it works. The first 12 people to sign up will tie a dozen of their favorite trout flies and mail them to me with a self addressed stamped package. I will return to each person one fly from each others dozen. It is a good way to trade patterns and ideas. After we get 12 people aboard I will post my name and address. To keep it simple the pattern will simply be "trout fly". Wet, dry or nymph you make the call.
Trust me boys. Fly Swaps are common on fly fishing blogs.
Okay, I've got to play "web guy" for a minute. First, BuckHunter speaks the truth...fly swaps are common. Fear not. I've been involved in many on various boards. Please get as many fly swaps going as you guys like. I think they're a great way to trade patterns, see what's out there and learn some new tying techniques.
Just know that officially, F&S is not a middle-man or anything in any way. If things ever get sour in a swap, we will not find anyone, drag them out of their home, tar and feather them and dunk them in an icy river. That will be up to you guys to make those arrangements :)
Now proceed with the swapping...
im down. do they have to be the same pattern?
Jerry,
they should be so everyone gets the same flies in their box returned to them.
Hopefully we get enough response to make it worth while.
As Joe said they are common and I love them. Not only do I tie my own flies I design them. Seeing other patterns is a passion of mine.
We need to have just one successful one and I think the rest will fall into place.
sounds good, ill start hittin the vice
Count me in for a dozen
Thanks guys. If anyone needs to call me just to make sure I'm "credible" You can reach me at 1-800-560-7356 ext 4. That's my work number. If I'm not in I'll call you right back.
Jeff Kreager
BTW, I'm tying the #16 black stone. It's our first hatch in Ohio.
Hey Buckhunter, I saw your story about being lost in the Wasatch. Do you still live in Utah? I grew up in Sandy and now live near Logan.
Maybe we can get together and do some fly fishing and swap flies in person.
Charley, I never finished that story. I gotta get back to that. I live in Ohio but was attracted to Utah by the over the counter elk tag. I fell in love with Utah the second I stepped out of the truck and heard the elk bugle. I arrowed a nice cow and fished the rest of the trip. I was in heaven. Couple years later I arrowed a small muley and fished again. I've been meaning to get back. It was wonderful.
You can count me in for the swap. Keep me posted.
Buckhunter, if you ever make it back to Utah, let me know and we'll do some fishing together.
Sweet! When is a good time for trout out there?
Salmon fly hatch in April- May is unbelievable if the water doesn't get too high. Hoppers in summer, but I have to admit that I spend fall and early winter trolling.
thats a great idea of a fly swap count me in
I wish to thank all who have joined or who are considering joining. I figure after the first successful swap the second will come easier. I understand the hesitation of sending a dozen flies to a complete stranger but after the first swap I will no longer be a stranger.
Please mail your flies to me:

Please have your flies to me by 2/28/09 and include your username. I will tag each fly so everyone will know who tied what. Don't forget I need a self address stamped container to return them in.
This has nothing to do with quality so if you are a beginner please feel free to join in.
If I do not have 12 guys or gals signed up you will get your excess flies back. Thank you for your participation.
Note to F&S staff. It would go along way to have a committment from one of the writers.
Jeff - I will be tying a fly called the "Cross Dresser". I have used it for Brook Trout, Rainbows, Browns, and Steelhead. It's been that goto fly quite often.
I would like to get in on this. Do you have twelve yet? If not I'm in.
You are in krg0120.

Kosofish is #7
Will you be hosting more of these fly swaps later on this year, I'm planning on getting into flyfishing and fly tying this spring and this sounds like a really good idea.
I'm in...sounds like fun.
frontboards, Hopefully there will always be one going on. I'm already looking for ideas for the next fly. Saltwater? Bass? Pike? I'm also hoping for some international participation. With this venue the possibilities are endless.
Swimswithtrout is #8. Thank you.
Bass, i don't really tie trout.
Hey Buckhunter, I'm in if there's still room.
Liotus212 is #9.thank you.
With over 3 weeks left prior to the due date we should have no problem getting 12 participants.
We should thank the editors and Cermele for posting the swap on the front page for added attention.
Not sure if you're up for a canuck, but I'm game.
Kucher
This is an equal opportunity fly swap.
Kucher is #10. Thank you.
Add me in buckhunter.
I'll have them to you by the 28th at the latest.
Matt
Your in Matt.
Need just one more.
Etangler is #12.
We are fully locked and loaded for the first F&S fly swap.
Follow the instructions above and please call or email if you have any questions.
SWAP #2?
We should probably want to start a new thread but are there any good ideas. We can swap bass flies, panfish, saltwater (mine would suck), classic flies, pike, salmon, steelhead, international, most unique? The ideas are limitless.
Don't forget, the flies are due 2/28!
Thanks I'll have'em to ya in a week.
I also do some pike fishing in the summer up in Minnesota so maybe we can work on that??? later on down the road with any earlier success on this swap.
I think flies tied with the oddest material would be cool...gum wrapper wings, carpet fiber tails....just a thought. You guys run the show.
Anyway, glad this one got off the ground. Have fun.
By the way Buckhunter, now that you're full, I'm going to pull the link from the homepage. When you get another one started, I'll hype it there again.
I'm in for the second swap also if we're taking names.
For the second swap, how about Bass Flies? or Salmon Flies?
Streamers would be good too.
Just let me know.
thanks
Matt
You can count me in for the second one too. I would be interested in Steelhead/Salmon type streamers.
I have mine done for the first one, they will be in the mail tomorrow.
ETangler gets the teachers pet award. He is the first to get his flies in and they are sweet. Can't wait to see the rest.
Just streamers on the second, and I'm in, can't tie a dry if my life depended on it...
Yea, or a Salmon and Steelhead swap, I got started steelheading this year and I don't have too many flys.
kjflorrian,
I got your flies. Wow! Very nice. What's that name of the pattern?
I've taken photos (very primitive)of the flies I've rec'd so far and have posted them in my profile. Click on my name and check them out. They are very impressive.
Thanks Jeff I appreciate the award!!!
Hey Jeff, Heaven forbid something happens and we're short a person for some reason, if you can't get a replacement fly, let me know and I'll get you a pattern there in a few days after the notice.
ET,
Thank you for the offer. How's the fishing down that way? I need to get away for a few days and it looks like the steelheaad will be swamped here for awhile.
Come on down we are busting big browns and bows now. Brook trout restoration project is well under way as well.
did my flys come in yet?
buckhunter - it's called the Crossdresser - a pattern I picked up from some tyer that guides up here. Like I mentioned before, I use short strips, looks like a minnow when wet. Caught rainbows, brookies, browns, and steelhead on it. Good all around pattern.
Guys,
I'm in on the second one!! I'll tie whatever the theme is!
JH
Jerry,
They were not in todays mail. I'll keep an eye out and post it when I get them.
Flyfishermanj. Fly Swap 2 will start next week. Any more ideas will be welcomed.
I've been tying like a mad man lately. Have you ever gotten into that zone and sit down and whip up a few dozen in a few hours?
Yeah, it's nice when you get in that zone! It's almost like a runners high at the tying bench, AWESOME FEELING!!
As a theme for Swap 2, maybe we should do a attractor pattern from your local area since we a pretty well spaced out?
I got a package of Black Woollys today in a small round "Fly Shop" container. What's your screen name? Very nice flys by the way.
Hey Buckhunter, Sorry for the small delay, was an idiot and accidentally put an old stamp on my envelope of flies and got them back today, but you should still have them by the 28th, sorry for the inconvenience.
By the way, I have a dozen size 14 Olive Scuds coming your way, a killer here in early spring in the limestone creeks of Central Pennsylvania.
Liotu212,
Another Pa guy! Do you live in Ceatral Pa?
Nice spelling on my last post???
Liotus, no problem.
I use to fish PA a bunch. Oil City, Volant, near 7 springs. How's the fishing now?
I actually go to School at Penn State and have been here for the past three years but, judging by the quality of fishing, pretty much never want to leave. The fishing is still really good here Buckhunter, and I'm originally from Pittsburgh which is about an hour from 7 Springs. I haven't been out as much as I would like to the past few weeks with classes and everything but we just actually had a huge cicada hatch here the end of last spring/beginning of summer and it was the time of my life. It was the closest thing to hopper fishing out west I've ever experienced in PA. Every three or so casts you were rewarded with either a fish on or a huge boil that got the blood really pumping. I', going to put some pics up later today and one of them is a Spring Creek brown with a big size 8 Cicada in his mouth. Flyfihermanj, do you live in Central PA?
Buckhunter, did you get my flies yet?
Liotus212, I live near Harrisburg, but used to live in Lock Haven...fished Fishing Creek a lot when I lived there...scuds in the winter killed! I hit the Cicadas on Penns last year...didn't catch the numbers like I do earlier in the season during the perla stone / dark sulphur nymphing blitz, but caught much bigger fish...on the surface with size 8 foam bugs!!!! Is it 2025 yet?
Can't wait to see / try everyone's ties!
Swimswithtrout, I got your flys today. Thank you for the extra one. They look fantastic.
Liotus212, You must be the same age as my son. He's a junior at Ohio University. I've heard a lot about the fishing around Penn State. Say Hello to Joe Pa for me.
I'm going steelheading tomorrow so I'll be off line all day. I'll post tomorrow night the flys I get tomorrow.
Hey Jeff, Let me know about swap #2 if you need another guy. I got a great pattern for you to share!!! I don't want to knock someone out of their turn, so let me know if you're short on the next swap.....Caught a bad case of hooky last week from work (cough, cough) went to the Oconoluftee River in Cherokee N.C. and caught a 30" Brown.
Your killing me ET. I drove 3 1/2 hours today just to find the rivers flooded. I kicked around couple hours and drove 3 1/2 hours back. Great times. Flows charts must be screwed up. My daughter lives in Northern GA. so I'll be down that way soon.
Kucher, Your flies have arrived. What's up with the shipping cost?
Hey Buckhunter, Just wanted to let you know the flies are in the mail, should be there shortly. Sorry again about the delay but yea, me and your son are most likely the same age although I'm pretty sure the deer hunting is a little better in his neck of the woods..
Liotus, I'll look for the flies. Thanks for the heads up.
The deer hunting here is unreal. Too bad I have my farm for sale.
No, I live about an hour south of Pittsburgh. Fish central often though, as for the fishing around 7 springs, pretty dang good these days, same goes for Volant(heading there next weekend!) and Oil City is awesome in the spring b4 it warms up!
1 Dozen #12 PT Nymph in the mail today sorry for the delay.
Buckhunter,
I shipped them express just to be sure they'd get down to you in time. I sent them last week and the post office said if I just regular mailed them it might take 2-3 weeks and I didn't want to miss the deadline. No time limit on getting 'em back though, and like I said before if postal charges are too much I'm more than willing to ship that money order to compensate.
Just FYI,
Most shipping cost I'm seeing from around the country is around $1.40. My guess is it's .99 cents for the packing envelope so for less than $5 you should have everything ready to go both ways.
SportmanMatt, I have rec'd your flies. Thank You!
Thanks for the update 3wgt.
I'm waiting for a few late arrivals. If I get your flies after I mail out the others I willsimply include your flies into the next fly swap. If you are running behind PLEASE PLEASE do not overnight them. It just cost way too much. Most guys in the US are spending less than $1.50 to ship one way.
I must say so far I have been very impressed with the flies I have received so far. Good work guys.
Kyle and 3wgt.
I got your flies today.
Buckhunter, glad to see they got there. I was running behind on getting to the Post Office so I figured best way was Express. Ship them back whichever is cheapest, don't worry about the change, use it to help cover shipping costs for some of the other guys.
Matt
Waiting on Liotus's flies then they should be in the mail by this Friday.
Liotus, I got your flies today.
I have mailed all the flies today. I rec'd a total of 10 dozen so you will be getting 3 of your own flies back. If I receive the other 2 dozen they will be in the next swap. I have tagged each fly so you know who tied it. Let me know what you think after you get them. Thank You.
Hey Buckhunter, good to hear you got my flies and I'm glad they made the cut for the first swap. I apologize again for the delay but thank you for everything that you did in setting up this swap. I fell in love with fly swaps a few years ago but I know this may be the first for many in our group, and because of your immense care about this along with your daily updates, I know they will be hooked too. I look forward to seeing all of the flies in a few days as well as to the next swap. Thanks again for everything.
I concur, thanks Buckhunter! This was my first swap so needless to say I'm excited to see how she all turns out.
I got my flies today and they look awesome! Thanks everybody, but especially buckhunter for organizing everything.
Can't wait to fish them...I fish year round, but it's getting close to that time when my wife becomes a seasonal widow. Thanks again.
Great flies and hope to do it again soon.
Got my flies yesterday, Thanks to everyone that was in on it. They look great and I can't wait to wet a line with them.
