super braids or mono?

Uploaded on April 29, 2009

Each spring I fish a very popular walleye run on a river. Hundreds of huys show up each day when the water conditions are right. The most popular lures are jigs - they are cheap to replace since many are snagged and lost to the rocks. For a whle Inoticed many guys switching over to super braids from mono. but when they snagged the bottom had a hell of a time breaking off. (and when they do these long strands of line create an even bigger problem of catching other cast lines) Since then the trend seems to be going back to mono.

Question: what do you use? - mono or super lines, or do you use both in different applications?

Also, what is your preferred brand?

Scott, I assume you are talking about the Maumee or Sandusky river. I know exactly how you feel when it comes to the snags in the Maumee. I have used Fireline Crystal for the past 3 walleye runs out there and love the stuff. It is as important to carry a glove with you as it is bringing a pole so when you get snagged, you can pull pull on it by wrapping the line around your gloved hand. I noticed that I lost fewer jigs when using this line because the line is a little stonger and won't strech. Another plus about Fireline is that it with stands the poundings on the rocks better than mono.

I am a MONO-LINE man;Spider Wire brand is quite durable against rocks and debris and has little stretch. I find it easier to tie knots with, and braid is just too tough to break. I have broken to poles and "braid cut" my hand on more then one occasion using that line!

My trout rods are spooled with mono but everything else has one form of braid or another. I just put suffix 40lb on my main rod because Im finding myself on pike, small muskie, and pickerel quite often. But for a good solid bass line I like the spiderwire 10# braid, its lite and durable, Ive never had a fish break me off but I can still break it cleanly if Im snagged.

River fishing I go with superbraids such as powerpro or spiderwire,

Braids all day! Impact/abrasion resistant. And also strong as an ox!

Well it look s like I'm going to have to try some braid. Thanks for your input guys!

Streack,

Yep, I live a quarter-mile from the Maumee and have fished the run for the past 9 years. Caught my all-time best this year, a 12.6 pounder.

I like mono, braids dont last as long and if you use it to much, it gets bad and breaks. Fluorescent lines are good to, try that. I like Berkley Trilene XT or Sufix for mono and Fireline for flourescent.
