Bass Fishing

What do you take for granted?

Uploaded on August 04, 2009

Today has been one year since we lost Capt Garrett "Tubes" Lawton, on that same day in that same vehicle that I was driving my life changed forever. When you come that close to death and laying there on the operating table wondering what is wrong with your head because you can not see it. You begin to think about life. I was thinking about how much I took for granted, the things I did foolishly, the little things that we always complain about. Well I challenge all of you to do this. The next time you are down or you are complaining about something petty be grateful, be grateful that you are alive and have things to complain about. I am not preaching anything just want you to think about how much most take for granted, and a true hero was sent to protect us on this day.

What I take for granted in fishing is, I always just assume that I can just drop my line in the water and catch a fish. I wish it is that easy but you need to work techneques and out smart the fish.

Probably 6 years ago as we stood outside our vehicles waiting for the gate to be opened, a good friend let out a squeal and said a bee had stung her. She showed me the knot on her head, the gate was opened and we all returned to our vehicles. As she approached the gate, she told the guy standing there that she was in trouble. Within minutes...she was dead.
I do not take anything for granted anymore as I realized that day that tomorrow is not a promise. If the car moves, I am in it. If I want to go on a hunt or a vacation, if there is anyway possible...I go.
Things that would have bothered me before and kept me up at night, don't because I just don't sweat the small stuff anymore.
Live every day like it is your last and make sure you tell your family and friends how much you love and appreciate them. You might not get the chance to tell them in the morning.

I found out just over a year ago that my father has terminal cancer. We found out because of a freak car accident he was in. The medication he is taking is holding the cancer at bay, but the medicine itself is taking its toll on him. My advice is not to take your family for granted. He could have died in that car accident, but we have been given a few more times to say "I Love You" and I have taken advantage of those times. He is the only father I will ever have and the only one I could have wanted.

P.S. He is also one helluva fisheman!

usmcturkey, Thanks for the thoughts, and thanks for your sacrifice.
I have had an experience with similar life altering events as well. My 4 year old little girl was diagnosed with polyarticular JRA. (Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis). It is a story way to long to post here, but there was a time of sheer uncertainty that was really tough to go through- facing possibilities of synovial sarcomas, then wondering about he effects of debilitating joint failure at an early age, and other related challenges. We have been to the best docs on both coasts, and a lot of other places. She is a trooper, and doing well, but the disease is still very present, and very threatening to a normal life. We have come to understand much through this process- coming to terms with Faith, giving our problems to God and waiting patiently for His responses, and giving up on a lot of things in life that really are not all that important. Most of all, it has taught us the true value of a loving and dedicated family life. I take far less for granted now than I used to.

I used to be in a depressed fog and take alot for granted but not anymore! Every day is a gift from God and I try to appreciate it and make sure I tell my family everyday I love them...One more note, this might not work for lots of people but once I stopped taking all the meds the Dr was shoving at me I started to clear up. I don't advise anyone to stop on their own but you might want to talk to your Dr if it's not helping.

Something I took for granted that I wish I could get back is my childhood. My teen years should have been some of my best. Instead, I chose to squandered it on booze and drugs. But, I'm thankful the Lord has given me a second chance at childhood through my precious daughter, whom I hope will not make the same mistakes I did. We as a US People are blessed beyond comprehension because of our culture of goodness. God bless, hope you 100% recover from the battle you encountered.

Don't take anything in life for granted. Enjoy every day you have on this planet. Take pleasure in your family. Have good friends and treat them with respect. We have it all and sometimes we just don't take the time to realize the magnitude of what it is that we possess.
