Hey there,
I don't have the magazine handy to see what you are refering to, but Dave Petzal had an blog some time ago about the new Marlin that is coming out -- "The Mighty Mini Marlin" Oct 23, 2008. You probably won't see that in stores for a while...
You might want to check out the custom Marlin work done by Wild West. Their page is: http://www.wildwestguns.com/
The particular gun you are interested in is a Marlin 1895g modified by Brockman Custom Gunsmithing. I believe it's what they call their beast package. http://www.brockmansrifles.com/index.asp
It's kind of pricey, but a few guys swear by their work, including hunter Vince Lupo, who has taken the African 5 with that gun. I don't think you could go wrong with either their work or that of Wild West Guns. If you care to go a slightly cheaper route, the 1895g on page 93 has some modifications that you can add yourself to a stock 1895g, and which are available at Midway USA. Those would be the aftermarket laminate stock, and the aftermarket lever. http://www.midwayusa.com/BROWSE/BrowseProducts.aspx?pageNum=1&tabId=9&ca...
If you wanted to then parkerize the gun, you could do so yourself, or have a local gunsmith do it for you with the kit from Shooter's Solutions. From my experience with their conversion coatings and bluing compounds, they are by far the best in the business...no one else is even comparable as far as I'm concerned!

Take care, and God bless.

One correction, the package from Brockman's in question is the "Super Guide" package. Interestingly, it seems you can get it from Cabelas.
This may be what you're looking for. It's definitely what I'm looking for.
