What is the best position for and elk mount?

Uploaded on February 14, 2009

I have always wondered what the best mount position for a large bull elk is. I have seen some with the bull bugling, but I wonder how great this would look in a house. It seems that when the bulls antlers extend back far enough it limits the kinds of mounts possible. Is this true? What do you think is the best elk mount?

Bugling mount looks beautiful, but a lot of taxidermist's charge a pretty penny for this type of mount. Regardless of what you do, I would do a shoulder mount for a nice elk.

I like the bugling mount but it does cost quite a bit more than the typical straight ahead looking head. I have seen some with the head turned to the side as if looking in that direction. Placed properly on your wall this can be very attractive. I always wanted to mount a cow's head to go with the bulls but never felt so compelled enough to let go of that much cash. I still think it would look cool having one of each sex. If you are fortunate enough to get a huge bull the antlers can be removable which certainly allows easier lifting and moving it through doorways.

I like the just the antlers with a little bit of skull. The Full head mount is popular.

On the wall above the stone fireplace!

For a big elk you better have ten foot ceilings!

How about a 16 foot vaulted ceiling? My son's big 6x6 is there right now, but it is going to be relocated if I get one bigger!

To WA Mtn, above the fireplace looks good but it plays hell on the mount.
I worked for Jonas Bros. Taxidermy in Denver, and have "seen it all" as for as mounts go. My advice, mounted the way YOU want to see it. Sneak left/right, bugling, skull(bleached)on wall, skull on mounting board(floor). It's up to you, see what I mean?
Congrats on the bull though.

Looking for a picture of a cool elk pedestal mount. I can't seem to find one on line (if you can believe that). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have several big bull elk mounts in various positions. Think the "sneak" position is my favorite, either left or right. Where it hangs in the room may affect the pose. Also if it has a stronger side may influence the type mount.

My big racks are all mounted on fancy walnut plaques, custom made to my design. The skull bone is covered with wrinkled dark brown velvet. Personally, I think elk make an ugly mount. A real dog-faced critter. Only animal I would mount is pronghorn antelope or maybe a stone sheep.

I think it depends on the stong side of the mount. Elk, most of the time, have a one side of their antlers that has a better sword beam or whale tail from the G5 and G6 or G6 and G7. Be prapaired to have tall ceilings whether you plan on a European mount or a shoulder mount. As far as shoulder mounts go I would go with an "alert" position so the ears are standing up, nostrels flaired, and eyes wide open. Although, my friend had a mount done of a bull feeding and suprisingly it looks pretty good and it sits on the floor, no wall mount.

I got my elk mount back from the taxidermist and he is awesome. When I went to pick him up they had it set up in the showroom, on his pedestal. Actually took your breath away.
But, because he is too tall, I had to take him off the pedestal until we do something different. The top of the pedestal was removeable and that top part is made to look like the habitat that he was harvested in. It looks like mud and the taxidermist made elk hoof prints in the mud. Cool stuff.

Jay...yes it is the same elk and what a suprise when a family member brought over the magazine. I did not know it was in there.
I have some exciting news. I just got back from an Ontario archery moose hunt and I harvested a 55 1/2" moose with 19 points....WITH MY MATHEWS BOW AND A PINK MUZZY BROADHEAD.
Never, did I expect to harvest such a trophy but I am glad I did. Still can't sleep at night and it has been a week since my hunt. I have shot that animal 10 times a night since I got home. What a rush!!!

Friday I received delivery of the 360 bull I took last year while elk hunting with my 10 year old grandson. He has not seen it yet, it will hang in their home

Judy - Thats one fine bull moose too; I saw it posted in the photos section. Your definately on a roll. Maybe some of your luck will rub off on me; got a 6 day bull rifle hunt starting Friday in the big horn mountains of wyoming. Really pumped up about it. Took 3 points to draw unit 35.

Happy - You'll have to upload a pic of that bull; I'm settin my sights on a 300" bull this year. Always like to hear your stories; especially your African trips. A while back someone asked what profession everyone on the blog was in. I know you did not want to say what you did and I respect your privacy but I think you could help out some of the younger guys. My hunch is that you busted your butt through hard work and you are reaping the financial rewards now which is giving you the oppportunity to travel and hunt worldwide. You are a highly regarded contributor on this sight and I don't think I'm alone when I say I would like to hear more from you. Maybe someday when I get my 3 kids through college I'll be able to go to Africa -- a guy has to have a dream.

Jay...thanks for all the kind words. I wish you only the best of sucess on your upcoming hunt.
Not one to toot my own horn but I/we have worked hard to be able to do the things we do.
I think you are thinking of Jan that has been to Africa as I have not. Maybe some day but the only animal that I would like to harvest in Africa is a warthog. I know that sounds really goofy as there are so many beautiful animals there. Guess I just love hunting here but those dang warthogs are so ugly, just want to see one at 20 yards.
I have so many stories to tell as I journal every hunt. I have been blessed that one magazine has published two of my stories and have recently recieved notification that they are going to publish a third. I only wish that I could find someone to publish the others as I love sharing my hunts.
Unfortunately they are too long to post on this site, I find it hard to cut them down to size. (maybe I am just a little long winded) =)
Don't ever quit dreaming Jay. Make your bucket list and chip away at it.
Life is too short and every day is a gift.
Live*Laugh*Love and hunt your hiney off.
Good luck and keep me posted.
