Puppy won`t point

Uploaded on January 23, 2010

I have a 13 week old English Setter pup that will not point. He shows great interest in a wing and in fact he will find and bring back a wing tied to a dummy that`s been thrown into high grass. This pup has an excellent pedigree so I know he comes from great stock. Should I be concerned at this point, and is there anything I can do to help bring him along?

ihad the same problem with my shorthare but it wasn't a problem
with the dog it was me you can't rush them if there doing every
thing else right no worry take the time and the dog will get it
right the point is the pause before they go after the game you have to control it to work for you good luck to both of you

I had a German Shorthair who has passed, but my uncle has had 6. He is a pointer guru and he helped me a lot. He said when they are that young they really dont know what a scent is yet so wings dont usally work. What you can try is to take a fishing pole with about 3 foot of line on it (enought to keep the rod tip up so the pup cant bite it) and try a dish towel to the end of it. Put the puppy on a leash so you are the one in controll. You will start going in circles keeping the towel off the ground so your puppy will chase it. You and your puppy will start to get dizzle. At that point you want to stop so the towel is now on the ground. Most of the time the pup will stop to and when they are looking at it give the towel a few slight tugs to make it move a little and the dogs instincts should take over. DO NOT let him chew on the towel which is why you have the leash. I did it 20 mins a day every day for about a week and before i knew this dog was pointing leeves blowing thought the yard. Hope it works for ya. Any questions let me know.

pups like most things take time do not dwell on it. let him be a pup before he becomes a bird dog.trust me a couple months from now you will have a new problem to deal with and after that another and another. bond with him make him trust you let him discover things and make trouble and learn. let him run and be independent when he is little this stuff helps him develop attitude which will help when formal training starts.eventually natural ability kicks in,dont worry.

I have heard of the fishing pole trick before but this is the first time I've had it explained fully. Thanks!

Just be persistant and patient with him and his genetics will take over I think the major concern at the time being is working on his manners.

I've got a 4-1/2 mo gwp who is not showing me much at this time either. He is interested in birds, but doesnt show me flash point or play pointing at all like my other gwp puppy did. I'm not worried really. He has a terrific nose and it will show up as he matures. I dont train in a traditional manner anyway. Most trainers wait til 6mos. Thats a huge waste. I start right away with little things and add on as the dog is able. The key is to always have fun... you and the pup!!
