Bird Hunting
My $20 Primo's duck call has finally died on me. I'm looking to buy a new duck call soon...very soon, but I don't know what kind to buy because after all it's hard to try them out in the store. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm trying to keep the price on the low side too but I'll consider an expensive one.
for the low price i would suggest either a haydels deciever or a buck gardner double nasty II, for the high price call you cant go wrong with with a rnt origional or a big guys best smoken double reed
sorry its rnt original
I like the Buck Gardner double nasty II has a good ducky sound to it I think it was about $20 just my 2 cent's.
There's nothing wrong with the Primos calls. A Haydels will keep blowing even if your standing on your head in the water. I will always have one on my lanyard. Currently it's a DR85, the VTM is good too. They're not flashy or pretty but they are reliable, and sound good.
If you're duck nut and want to get mallards in the decoys with their feet down, get a Paul Kingyon call. The call has no top end, you can't make it squeek, the reeds are glued in, you can't mess with them. It is the loudest call you have ever heard and the tape that comes with it worth the price of the call. I thought it was too loud 'till I started calling loud and turned birds that had just ignored me. I don't work for him, I just like the call, my last one cost $125. I bought two because he's in his eightys and I don't ever want to be without his call.
Failing that the Yentzen sounds very good but it takes alot of air, to use it. The Buck Gardner calls that Delta Waterfowl sends me are pretty good too. Paul is at 319-752-4465. 607 N. 5th St., Burlington, iowa 52601.
You are going to spend a lot of money to travel to a hunting site, money on guns, ammo, hunting clothes, leases, licenses, permits etc and want a cheap duck call? Get some good calling lessons and buy a good call and reap the benefits. My 2 cents.
Rich N Tone is a great duck call with many models but i like the daisy cutter
in my opinion you can't go wrong with primos
Rich N Tone also like Echo calls
I use RNTs but my kid loves his Primos. Both seem to bring in the ducks. There are lots of small duck call makers in Arkansas and other areas of the south and mid-west that most of us probably never heard of that also turn out super calls. Check around on the net.
If it works for you, why change it? It sounds to me like you are an accomplished caller. I could go on a rampage here about over calling but I won't.
There are plenty of expensive duck calls that will do a good job for you but price has nothing to do with it. If you like how the call operates and you can make a few good sounds with it consistently so that ducks want to be where you are then you have a winner regardless of how much or how little it sets you back .
Neither price nor volume have anything to do with it. The duck call in your hands must convince ducks to do what you want them to do. Don't get caught up in the marketing hype-----timber call, close-in call, open water call----that is all bogus. For example, true flooded timber calls are LOUD. Think about it----you are in an area surrounded by 100+ year old oak trees. You must be able to reach out and touch someone.
I will suggest one hard and fast rule-----learn how to run a single reed call. There is a difference in control in terms of sounds and volume. A good single reed call can be manipulated to do it all.
I would start with the following low end calls:
Echo Poly Carb Single Reed
RNT Quack Head Single Reed
Zink Poly Carb Single Reed
DJ Calls Arkansas Style Cutdown Single Reed.
haydel dr-85
