Deer Hunting

Deer love Bacon Grease.....

Uploaded on September 12, 2009

We went on a hunting trip to Rockingham North Carolina a few years ago, and we were full fledged roughin it. We hunted the first afternoon, to no avial, next morning cooked breakfast, bacon, eggs, grits, and some coal biscuits. When I got done with the frying I was looking for a place to pour all the bacon grease somewhat away from camp, due to the wildlife we were not hunting. So about 30 yards from camp I found a stump that was about 8 inches in dia. so I poured the grease on the top of the stump and in a small circle around it, kinda like I would have done with buck jam, or something to that nature, any way we go on out and hunt the day, we took 2 does and 1 buck, so me and my 2 friends are dragging these deer back to camp and when we get close to the stump that I had poured the grease on low and behold theres about 8 or 9 deer standing around it with 2 does just eating and pawing at the grease, but we had already filled our tags and that really sucked because these deer were a little bigger. So for the past 3 years I have been putting bacon grease on stumps close to my stands and it works great have had alot of success, but watch it when you go into the woods, because with alot of attractants you never know when the deer will be there eating up the porky goodness, so use caution when entering the woods....

I would definitely use caution, not so much because of spooking deer, but due to the fact that grease also draws sows, potentially with cubs. Bear would be awfully hard to see an hour before daylight when approaching your stand.

That is strange indeed being that deer are herbivores. I may dump some in front of my trail cam to test this. Interesting.

Very interesting. I would need to agree with PA bowhunter about attracting bears because bacon is such a strong smell. However, I can see where deer would be attracted to it also. Bacon is loaded with salt, which is something deer love and in places where natural salt licks are rare, salt is a great attactant. The oils from the grease make an excellent water repellant preventing the dissolved salt in the oil from washing away quickly. The grease would probably also provide some proteins and natural fats...everything a deer needs for growth and developement.

So if bacon grease clogs humans arteries, imagine what it would do to the deer. I defientally wouldnt want the deer I am hunting to be eating that.

It might also attract some other unwanted visitors if they see you doing it: the game warden.
