Deer Hunting

Murphy's Law Meets Deer Hunting

Uploaded on November 03, 2009

everyone makes mistakes, no matter how long you hunt. it might happen this year or next, but it will happen. i have been hunting for quite some time and this is my most recent run in with murphy's law. it was the second day in november and the rut was just beginning. after sneaking into the woods, carrying my climber which got heavier with every hill i climbed. finally, i found a suitable tree and ascended into the nose bleed section of the forest. once i stopped the bleeding, i stowed my hunting pack and quiver on the foot platform out of the way... i thought. after an hour of watching squirelles chase eachother, i see the white antlers of mr. big through the dense underbrush. at sixty yards, i stood up. thirty yards, he is still closing fast, i need to get my feet set and draw. i slowly move my right foot which promptly connects with my hunting pack which sends my quiver diving towards the leaf covered ground. upon impact, the large 12 point did a perfect leaping 180 degree turn and disappeared into the trees.

we all have these stories, what's yours?

I had something very similar happen to myself this year. While hunting I get a good mature buck to come in. The problem is I expected him on one trail that is exactly 30 yards. Having that in mind he takes the trail that is 16 yards. By the way did I mention that I have taken several P&Y bucks and this one was mature but by far wouldn't of been my largest. I grunt to stop him, anchor my 30 yard pin right behind his shoulder aiming into his opposite shoulder and let the arrow fly. Yes you read that right I used my thirty yard pin on a sixteen yard shot. I missed the buck, he ran off an stopped about 60 yards away. This is were it gets good. While trying to grunt this buck back, which he was responding well to the grunt tube, I neglected to notice the much larger buck that was about 30 yards behind him on the same trail. He stopped sniffed my arrow and promptly busted me in my stand. I was sick. I don't know how many deer I have taken with my bow, but I would of thought that I had never hunted before based on the way I was in that stand.

Well there was the first year I "bow" hunted with an ol' "bear" recurve and shot out of arrows(6 !) on a doe. I'd shoot, she'd walk over and sniff that one, I'd shoot again ! We played that game for over an hour !

It was my first deer ever. It was Thanksgiving day I was sitting on the ground in a group of 3 trees that grew together. I had been there about 10 mins when 3 does walked literally 10 feet from me. I knew that I wasn't supposed to move so I put the butt of the gun on the tree aimed at the biggest shot and she didn't move. I mean the gun went off but none of the deer took a step. So very slowly and as quitely as I think I could I jacked another shell and tried again. Same thing they freaking stood there. So I jumped up to my feet and in the process jacked another shell when my feet hit the ground i picked the largest pulled the trigger again and she fell. The other 2 just stood there looking at her. Had to walk out 5 feet from them to get them to leave.

why not reload and shoot the other two? first buck i ever got was during a drive where a buck and doe ran out. my hunting buddy shot first and the buck went down(he was hunting with a 20ga) i shot the doe and she went down. when i shot, the buck got back up, so i shot him and he dropped. fur flew on my partner's shot and fur flew on my shot. we walked up and there was only one hole from my 12 ga... weird, huh?

Thats why I always liked those storys by Pat McManis, they are something that we all can relate too.
Thats some of the best times when everything seems to have went wrong. You can, and most likly will relive them every year at deercamp, whether you want to or not.
How many times I can remember doing the old one legger threw the ice in the swamp when I was younger, and how after awhile when your leg is good and numb, how it almost seems warm maybe even hot.

On several different occasions I have missed several deer with my bow, i dont like to think of it as shooter error (haha), i blame it on the darn tree limbs. I last season i heard a deer come blazing in behind my stand, so i stood up and turned around. as soon as i did that i heard the deer put the brakes on and stop. So i grunted a few times and he started back my way. then i saw his pearly whites (antlers not teeth) coming through the brush, so when i went to set my grunt down to hook my release to the string, my grunt call fell to the ground, thinking that he was going to take off, he kept coming. thinking that he is stupid (which is a dumb idea) i drew on him, he was 8 yards away perfectly broadside, head turned away from me. i let the arrow fly, and to my luck there just happened to be the smallest, most insignificant white pine cluster that my arrow hit, sending the arrow into the ground right at his feet. so he looked up at me, seemed like he stood there for 20 mins., stomped his feet, snorted, then took off.

Oh i forgot my best story....
Me and my cousin decided to head out bow hunting on a morning after an ice storm in the fall, and of course, all of the leaves were so crunchy that it seemed like a gun went off everytime we took a step. So by the time we made it 200 yards into the woods, the sun was coming up. We then made it to about 400 yards into the woods and spotted a 4 point on top of a ridge, so we both took a knee on the side of the trail. so we both grunted a few times, just playing around with the small buck and he ended up walking right to us down the trail (about 15 feet wide) and made it 10 yards from us until he decided that he couldnt figure out what we were and took off. so me and my cousin walked up to the ridge, talked for a little bit (not very quietly), took a bathroom break, my cousin smoked a cig., then continued walking to our stands, still very slowly. we didnt walk for 15 yards and heard a deer come crashing through the woods. I was about 10 yards down the trail from my cousin and we both took a knee on the side, and grunted and the deer stopped. We knew the deer was close but we couldnt see him because of the dirt berm on the side of the trail, that was about 8 feet over our heads, kneeling down. the deer started walking again and i knew he was realy close, so i drew my bow, and the huge 8 point buck, stood right at the top of the berm literaly 10 feet from me. So i put my pin right on his brisket and when i went to let the arrow fly, the velcro on my release let loose, making a horrible sound. (i think velcro is the devil of bow hunting hahaha). so the buck jumped on the other side of the berm 25 yards into some thick brush, so i found a whole in the brush and kept following the buck in my sights, waiting for him to get to the whole. Little did i know that my cousin wasnt following the buck, he already had his sights on that whole. so when he got to the whole i made a grunt noise with my mouth and he stopped...right when i went to release the arrow, i heard my cousin relase one and i heard the arrow hit. I was so mad that i didnt get the shot but happy for him that he got the buck.

When I was maybe 14 I was bow hunting in Mich. and I didn't have a stand to use at the time, so I found a perfect natural one, a Pine tree uprooted and was leaning agenst another one. When you looked at it, it was a perfect ladder using the branches, right beside a heavy used Deer trail. I hunted all afternoon from my perfect stand, till it started to get dark. Just before I was going to climb down and head in for the night a lone Doe walked up from behind me which I could see from one side but had to set blindly waiting for what seemed like an hour for it to emerge from my perfect stands thick branches to take a shot. The Doe decided to bed down right under my stand! In my 14 yr old mind I decided that I would turn around and back down my branches holding my bow at the ready so I could draw and shoot as soon as I could see her.
I turned around standing on two branches which promply broke and I slid down the tree braking branches all the way till I crashed and burned on my back on the root ball at the bottom. While walking in to our cabin I couldn't help but laugh thinking what that poor Doe thought when I came crashing down out of that tree!
