Deer Hunting

Believer in Scent control?

Uploaded on April 12, 2009

My buddy and I decided to see how close we could get to deer, who were feeding at my corn pile. So we put on all of our scent-blocker garments and attempted to put on a stalk. We got busted because we were making to much noise. Then we decided to lie on the ground about 10 yards from the corn pile to see what happens. About 10 minutes latter there was a doe on its way. The doe came all the way to the corn pile and ate for about 10 minutes. The doe spotted my friends face and ran off. Tell me how you can't believe in scent control?

IDK HOW ANYBODY COULDNT BE A BEIEVER. I WAS STALKING A BIG 8POINT THAT TURNED OUT TO BE MY FIRST BUCK AND BEFORE I STOOD UP AND STALKED I PUT ON ALOT OF SCENTKILLER. I GOT UP ON THE SIDE OF A HOLLOW AND LOOKED FOR THE BUCK. A DOE THOUGHT SHE SAW ME SO SHE WOULD LIFT HER NOSE AND TRY TO SMELL ME BUT COULDNT DO IT SO SHE KEPT EATING. I KNEW I SAW THE BUCK GO NEAR THE DOE SO I JUST WATCHED AND HERE HE CAME...HE TRYED TO SCENT ME TOO BUT AS SOON AS HE WAS DONE AND GO BACK TO EATING...BANG!!!! NOW I ALWAYS HAVE SCENTKILLER ON WHEN I GO IN THE WOODS.

I agree that it works, but you should still shower and hunt the wind.

It's important to note that the doe was downwind of us the entire time as well.

I believe it all works to an extent but if you dont play the wind right more often than not they are going to bust you. Playing the wind remains to be my best defense against a whitetail's keen sense of smell.

Playing the wind is alot more important that buying the latest high priced gadgets. I've never bought scent lock clothing and kill plenty of deer just by playing the wind.

if you dont use the sent killer gum the deer could smell your breath if the wind is blowing at it.

I absolutely believe in endura-skin from bass pro. All I do is spot and stalk and last year I had does passing me close enough for me to knife. (or ride, which given the option I'd chose the latter)

Scent Control plays a huge part in still hunting, I use cedar to cover my scent. In my experience though movement plays the biggest role in whether deer know you there or not.

It definetly does work. However, I feel that some people trust new technology too much and dont study the ways that people have been killing deer for hundreds of years. There was no scent control back then, and no deodorant. Use scent eliminating clothing but still be aware of the wind direction. Mature bucks dont have to smell human odor to be spooked, all they need is a smell that is out of place from the normal surrounding woods and they are gone...

jay and BigWoodsHunter57 say it very well. Your not going to out wit the nose of a mature animal very often. Any scent that is out of place will sent a mature buck or doe to parts unknown. Playing the wind is the #1 way to shoot deer. Learning about how wind and breeze works is essential to long term success. You simply don't have to rely on expensive products to harvest whitetails, you only have to learn you craft. I have always been of the opinion that the nose of a deer is the toughest part of their defenses to overcome.

I think that scent reducer can help, but I would not call it scent "eliminator" because I don't think that you can ever totally eliminate your scent. I think that playing the wind is more important.

I think both sides of the issue are important.
Yes playing the wind is critical but where I hunt it is fairly densly wooded so because of the trees the wind seems to change directions quite often, so I beleve that in this kind of situation the scent control can make or break wether you get a deer or not.

i agree with both sides, my old man thinks half the new "gadgets" and stuff are all kinda bs in his opinion, we mostly stand hunt and he has pics on his cell phone of a doe he could of jumped on sniffing the stand ladder, i definitely think the scent control stuff works but you can't really judge it in the woods and know 100 percent for sure, the deer that walks by the day you have scent control on probabbly was'n't walking by the day you didn't or maybe he was? only god knows i guess, lol, do you guys fart in the woods? that's probably a big alarm for deer nearby isn't it?

I still hunt the wind because, I do sweat and even though I use scent free products to wash head to toe. It is better to be same than sorry. But while wearing scent controled clothing and hunting on the ground I had a deer literally walk within inches of my feet before first light. I was concerned I was going to get stepped on and what would happen next.

Try doing it without scent control ... have your friend cover his face this time.

I've had deer within 6 feet of me and I was not wearing any scent control at all. The key is I stay down wind. Being close to game isn't a valid reason to claim that a product works, or doesn't work for that matter, especially when the same result can be produced WITHOUT wearing the product. Your experiment was biased because you never had a control(you didn't try the same experiment WITHOUT scent control), wind direction was not noted, and you didn't repeat the experiment to be sure that your initial result wasn't a fluke.

Save your money, play the wind. It's what great hunters all over the world do, and it's VERY successful.
