Deer Hunting

Buck grunts

Uploaded on April 03, 2009

Last year, on my best night of hunting without shooting a buck, I had a great 10 pt. with about an 18 inch spread walk out of a ravine and along side the trail I was hunting on. Unfortunately, he was in thick cover only 15 yrds. away, and I couldn't get a shot. But when he first got up the hill, it sounded like he was growling and he continued to do this for about 3-4 minutes. What was he doing and have any of you ever heard any funky sounds from a whitetail buck?

Short growls in sequence? That is what is called a tending grunt. Usually occurs when they are chasing does around.

He was on a hot doe trail.
The buck was saying to all of the other resident bucks, here I come ready or not!
He had loving on his mind, and was ready to fight if it came to that.

That's one of the most exciting times to be in the woods.

Huntcamp is exactly right! He had a hot doe close or was on the trail of one.

I would've tried a snort wheeze to bring him back. If that didn't work, bleet, loud.

I would have tried growling back at him using one of the Primos or Mad Calls that are made to exactly replicate those same growling or roar sounds. It might have made him think there was a challenger in the area after the same doe he was.

I agree with MNhunter23, Primos makes a call that is designed to copy that growning and roar sound. The only catch is that you have to learn how and when to use it. The call does come with a mini-cd that shows you different situation where bucks are making this sound. I actually used the call this past hunting season and my only advice is to be careful of your surroundings when you use it. In order to mimic the roar sound the call cannot be used quietly, you need to be loud. If you arent careful you could scare deer away!

I agree with huntcamp and 2Poppa. This buck was on a hot doe! In my opinion is is very difficult to call this buck in. I've never been successful doing it. He knows what he wants and he knows your not it!

If hes on a hot doe forget it he won't move off of it maybe a decoy would have changed his mind.

Yep he was grunting because he was following a hot doe. If you had had your grunt call with you, you may have been able to get him to come back into range.....but mabey not since he was following a hot doe.?
