Q:
I have a cabin in Grayling, and flyfish the Au Sable River. I was wondering what parts of the river (different branches or different roads to fish off of) have good fishing and what fly to use in different seasons/months?

The Challenge Chapter of TU sells river guides that show access points:

http://www.challengechapter.org/

Several stores also sell the guides. Some of the two-track access points take some trial and error to figure out, though.

Pretty much anywhere in the Mason Tract downstream from Chase Bridge is good. Some deep and fast water you need to be cautious of. The North Branch is a treat though there are deep holes in some stretches you must walk around. Little canoe traffic. Some walks in are long. Easiest access points will have the most fishermen and the most educated trout, so explore.

The Holy Waters are open year round. Much of the other waters are closed October until the April opener. Check the Trout and Salmon guide for the latest (DNR website). In this cold winter weather toss streamers at cover and strip slowly. Rest of the year best to figure out what is hatching from the charts or stop into Gates' or the Old AuSable and ask.
