I would get no less than medium action and all the way uup to heavy action, your rod needs backbone and with the eavy you'll be able to detect light bites faster. I like the 7 ft, gives good hook sets and alows for good long casts.

Any mid to upper level Shimano spinning reel is a good one to have. I have had Shimanos at almost all price points and have been satisfied with all.
I have to agree, you cant go wrong with a shimano. I like castaway and all star rods, great actions and great price
pflueger echelon
ok, but what action rod should I get?
and what should it be?

Ugly stick lite. I have no way to compare it to the upper class rods but they are tough, sensitive, and inexpensive.
