Q:
It's been quite a while since I actively fished thru the ice but want to get back into it this winter. What do you suggest for baits? I'm wondering about mealworms, nightcrawlers, or different salmoneggs. Your thoughts? Thanks much.

Where abouts you fishing and what for trout/
lakes/flood control dams for trout, mostly rainbow with the odd golden or maybe a brook once in a while.
ooohh Im jealous.. yes all of the above and invest in a easy pop up shanty they rock! and it makes it soooooooooooooo much more comfortable!
If minnows are allowed in your state hook it either through the back at the dorsal fin or through the upper lip (two schools of thought on hooking) then fish them 5 - 8 feet below the ice for trout or 1 foot off the bottom for walleye.
Nightcrawlers work well for rainbow trout about a foot or two below the ice. Pinhead shiners work well for salmon. Good Luck
out of my element here guys I have never had the opportunity to fish trout threw the ice. Sounds fun good luck!!!
I have noticed over and over, the best trout ice fishing is within 1 month of the lake freezing over. The sooner the better. Just make sure the lake is solid before going out there. Trout seem to be really hungry because their metabolism is high and little food.
i like using small frozen minnows or powerbaits on a small jig head, also jigging small len thompson spoons has worked good on the lakes i ice fish for brookies and rainbows
I've had good luck with a waxworm on a 1/32 oz.(size 8 or 10)jighead.good luck.
