ya the ugly stik is the best for price, everyone obviously thinks so. They are cheap, yet very strong. Wal mart has a bunch of em in different sizes all for around thirty bucks.
It depends on price. If you want to pay a lot, go with G. Loomis. The middle price zone would be a St. Croix, and lower is Ugly Stik. That being sad, the Ugly Stik will be the most durable of all three. You won't get the same sensitivity or casting distance, but you certainly will not break it.
Ugly Stick. Serviceable, durable, and not near as ugly as they make out. My girlfriend (now wife) got me one in 1984. I used it for two decades, and then lost it in a river when the boat capsized. I "replaced" it with something more expensive, but my son slammed a cardoor on it the first time I was out with it. I took it as a sign and got another Ugly Stick. I still wonder if some lucky bum hooked my first one out of the river.
Ugly stick is the toughest, but it has no back bone. If your brother plans on doing any worm fishing he'll need a rod with feel and stiffness/fast action. Look on the rod blank just above the reel mount for a med heavy or heavy action for good hook sets and sensitivity to feel that big fish suck up a worm.
Well, I have 2 Fenwick HMX spinning rods, both are amazing rods. They usually run from 70$-110$. If looking for something for less, BassPro Sops has good models in spinning and casting. If you're for a good casting rod Kistler or St. Croix is the way to go.

it depends on what he will use it for.
I would go with an ugly stick they are extremely strong
Ugly stick! I love their smaller rods.
Another Ugly Stick fan... they have a wide variety of models for every use and they are very nice for a very reasonable price.
And the winner is - Ugly Stik!!! I have several and I have no issues with any of them. I like the smaller, lighter ones.
Sounds like I will be looking for a ugly stick for him. Thanks everyone!!

Ugly stik-strong,light,versitile and sensitive. My favorite rod.
Another vote for Ugly Stick, treat them like dirt and they will last you forever.
Ugly Stik is probably the best way to go if he is tough on his rods... they stand up to anything!
