I beleive you are correct. The rimfire did come before the center-fire. Pretty interesting.
Correct, the original Henry rifle fired a 44 cal rimfire cartridge.

Yes that is correct, Smith and Wesson also had several rimfires. I believe 44, 38, and 32 come to mind...
